In this thesis, the thermal performance of bio-inspired wick is investigated. The bio-inspired wick is a heat pipe wick with two distinct characteristic pore sizes and is promising candidate for enhancing the performance of conventional sintered metal wicks. In the first technical chapter of this thesis, the capillary limit of bio-inspired wick is considered. The effects of particle size (40 ≤ d ≤ 600 μm) and cluster size (250 ≤ D ≤ 1440 μm) on the capillary limit are investigated. The capillary flows in the wicks are visualized using sintered glass powder wicks and a high speed camera. From the experiments, it is shown that the capillary performances of bio-inspired wicks are significantly higher than those of conventional mono-porous wicks: The capillary performance of 125/675 μm bio-inspired wick is 11 times larger than that of a 125 μm mono-porous wick. In the bio-inspired wicks, three distinct capillary flow regimes are observed, depending on the ratio between particle and cluster sizes. A semi-analytic model for predicting the capillary performance of bio-inspired wicks is developed for each regime. The model prediction shows excellent agreement with experimental results and indicates that the cluster size should be 4-6 times larger than the particle size for an optimal capillary performance. The effect of the contact angle on the capillary performance of bio-inspired wicks is shown to be negligible. In the second technical chapter, the boiling limit of bio-inspired wick is considered. The effects of particle size (45 ≤ d ≤ 200 μm) and cluster size (250 ≤ D ≤ 675 μm) on the boiling limit are investigated. In order to gain understanding of the boiling phenomena in bio-inspired wicks, the bubble movements in the wicks are visualized using glass particle wicks and a high speed camera. Based on the visualization results, an analytic model for predicting the boiling limit of the bio-inspired wicks is developed. The model predicts the experimental data well within the error of 15%, and indicates that the permeabilities of liquid and vapor are key parameters for determining the boiling limits of wicks. The bio-inspired wicks have much higher boiling limit than the mono-porous wicks, since they have much higher liquid/vapor permeabilities, by separating the flow paths of the phases. From the model, an optimal configuration of bio-inspired wick is found to be 4 < D/d < 6, which is the same optimum range with that for the capillary limit.
