Several studies have attempted to control or manipulate different types of sound fields in space and time using multiple sound sources. For example, one can reconstruct a sound field in a finite region using sound field reproduction methods such as higher order Ambisonics and wave field synthesis. Besides, one can enhance acoustic potential energy density in the desired zone by acoustic brightness and contrast control.
In these 3D sound control methods, a multichannel loudspeaker system and transfer functions of the system are used to obtain the input signals of each channel so as to generate the desired sound field. A transfer function refers to the relationship between an input signal and the pressure field at the region of interest. Transfer functions can be obtained by measuring the input signal and pressure field or by modeling mathematically using a monopole or dipole model.
Measured transfer functions include the characteristics of the system, for example, the frequency response of the multichannel loudspeaker system, the loudspeaker’s radiation pattern and location information, or the amount of reflection in the room. However, a long measurement time is necessary in these cases, as are many measuring instruments for a proper measurement of transfer functions. In the majority of cases, modeled transfer functions can be obtained without measurement, but performance degradation can arise due to the degree of difference between the model and the actual system. This is known as modeling error. Therefore, an aim is to calibrate modeling error by modeling transfer functions which include the system characteristics.
In order to include the system characteristics to the modeled transfer functions, calibration factors are added to the modeled transfer functions. Calibration factor can be obtained by transfer functions measured at one or multiple points when the multichannel loudspeaker system is set up. This means an in-situ calibration. We have to measure the transfer functions for calibration at a region where is assumed by far-field and free field to exclude the near-field effect and room reflection. Therefore, a measurement has to be carried out outside the boundary much longer than the wavelength for far-field assumption and inside the radius of reverberation for free field assumption. Least-squares method is used to calculate calibration factor for each channel by using measured transfer functions. We applied this calibration method to a 32-channel loudspeaker system which was implemented for the realization of various sound field control methods.
