In recent years, the study on biomineralization in cementitious materials has received much attention. Research involving microbial application proposes very promising methods to overcome conventional one. This study presents initial results of an experimental investigation to study the effect of using microbial carbonate precipitation (CaCO3) on the compressive strength of concrete. From the research, significant increase in compressive strength of concrete was achieved with the help of bacteria. This increase could be explained as the reduction of porosity inside the concrete.
Furthermore, calcium carbonate precipitation in water solution due to microbial activity of bacteria is dried and used as admixture and replacement of cement in mortar. The bacterial calcium carbonate (BCC) was examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) to study the bacterially-induced crystals and mineral composition. A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the fresh and mechanical properties of cement mortar blended with BCC. The aim of the investigation was to determine whether the BCC could be used as another potential admixture and replacement of cement for enhancing performance of cementitious materials. The results of this investigation show that the use of BCC could be used to develop efficient and sustainable bio-based construction materials.
