Due to the utmost importance of the nucleate boiling and the critical heat flux (CHF) phenomena, vast amount of works have been carried out more than over the past 50 years. Nevertheless, the near-surface boiling structure at high heat flux condition and the CHF triggering mechanism are still controversial even for the simplest case of horizontal pool boiling. This controversy is mainly due to the lack of direct and decisive observations on the physical phenomena near the boiling surface.
In recent years, a high precision CFD platform has been being developed in which finer scale LES and DNS codes are combined with a RANS scale CFD code and a component scale CFD code. One of the ultimate goals of this high precision CFD analysis is to simulate the CHF phenomena in PWR reactor core. Therefore, the correct understanding on the high heat flux boiling phenomena and the CHF mechanism is getting higher priority for the advanced simulation of CHF. It is necessary to identify the basic mechanism of CHF in a horizontal pool boiling condition as the first step toward the advanced simulation of CHF phenomena in PWR reactor core.
Another important thing for the advanced simulation of CHF is the accurate prediction of the subcooled boiling flow because even the CHF starts from the subcooled boiling flow at its upstream. The evaporation heat flux and the increase of IAC (interfacial area concentration) by bubble nucleation at a heated wall are determined by the local boiling parameters such as bubble detachment diameter, bubble nucleation frequency, and active nucleation site density. However, most of the previous studies were performed focusing on pool boiling systems. As a result, the prediction of these local boiling parameters in a forced convective subcooled boiling flow is still a challenge.
In the present study, the whole process of bubble nucleation to the bubble lift-off was examined using a high speed photography and a total 125 sets of data were obtained for the bubble lift-off diameter and bubble nucleation frequency. The bubble lift-off diameter and the bubble nucleation frequency show the dependence on the nucleation sites, and they compete with each other in removing the thermal energy from the boiling surface. The bubble nucleation frequency is more vulnerable to this stochastic nature. Unlike when the two parameters are considered separately, random variations in the bubble nucleation frequency is effectively smoothed out when combined into {f_b}times{D_lo}^2 while the consistency in the lift-off diameter is maintained.
Among the existing models and/or correlation for the bubble diameters in a forced convective boiling flow, Unal’s model agreed well with the present database of the bubble lift-off diameters. Unal’s model was improved by modifying the wall superheat correlation. Prodanovic et al.’s correlation was improved by re-evaluating the coefficient and exponents. The improved model and correlation for the bubble lift-off diameter, proposed in the present study, have an average prediction errors of 31-33% against the database constructed in the present study. A new correlation was proposed for {f_b}times{D_lo}^2, which not only shows an reasonable prediction error of 34% in average but also has the advantage that it can be directly applied to the boiling source term in IATE (Interfacial Area Transport Equation).
In-depth observations were made to identify the near-surface boiling structure and the CHF triggering mechanism in a horizontal pool boiling. A transparent heating surface was used in order to accomodate various visualization techniques more effectively. Synchronized with the total reflection, diagonal view, side view, bottom-up view, and top-down view observations were alternatively applied. Two synchronized digital high speed video cameras were used for the visualization. The present experiments were performed for a saturated pool boiling of distilled water (moderate wetting fluid) and freon R-113 (well wetting fluid) at an atmospheric pressure condition, and covered the whole range of nucleate boiling regime from isolated boiling condition to post-CHF condition. Simultaneous observations of the dry area behavior and the near-surface boiling structure enabled us to understand clearly how a dry patch is formed under a massive bubble, and how the dry patch evolves to the irreversible dry patch, leading to the CHF.
The base of individual bubble is almost dry except its early growth stage (so called, dry spot). Multiple lateral coalescence of bubbles produces a large massive bubble on the boiling surface while these bubble are growing, being attached to the boiling surface. Therefore, the base of large massive bubble is almost dry from its inception. In other words, the large dry patch under the large massive bubble results from the multiple merge of individual dry spots. This new finding contradicts the common postulation that a thin liquid layer with distributed vapor stems exists under the massive bubble. The basic mechanism of the large dry patch formation is similar both for the moderate wetting fluid of water and well wetting fluids of freon R-113.
At high heat flux condition, active bubble nucleation in the wetting region of the departing large massive bubble produces a residual dry patch at the departure of the large massive bubble. That is, the large dry patch is not completed wetted at the departure of the large massive bubble. Close to the CHF condition, the residual dry is not quenched but frequently re-expands to the large dry patch due to the enhanced bubble nucleation activity around the residual dry patch and mutual bubble coalescence among them.
Further increase of bubble nucleation activity around the residual dry patch causes the continuous re-expansion of the residual dry patch to the large dry patch throughout sequent departures of large massive bubbles. As a result, for moderate wetting fluid of water, a part of the residual dry patch is never completely wetted, which corresponds to the appearance of irreversible dry patch. If the heat production rate of the heating element is kept to be constant, the irreversible dry patch spreads widely over the boiling surface after its initiation due to the sequent temperature increase in the succeeding neighboring region, thus causing a burn-out of the boiling surface in a few seconds. Therefore, the occurrence of the critical heat flux is defined by the appearance of the irreversible dry patch.
For well wetting fluid of freon R-113, the CHF is not necessarily caused by the inception of continuous re-expansion of the residual dry patch to the large dry patch. It is because the migration of trapped liquid streams wets efficiently the residual dry patch in a localized way. The irreversible dry patch appears when the migrating trapped liquid streams evaporate completely before they arrive deep inside the residual dry patch. Afterward, the irreversible dry patch spreads widely over the boiling surface, leading to the burnout of the boiling surface.
Based on the recent findings and the present observations on the boiling heat transfer mechanism, a framework of improved dry spot model was proposed. The present model considers the decrease in area fraction of pure nucleate boiling with the increase in wall superheat, and also reflects the contribution of large massive bubble to overall heat transfer in high heat flux nucleate boiling regime and its gradual degradation in transition boiling regime. The basic concept of the model is that the whole boiling regime is a smooth extension of each boiling regime with inflection points at the CHF and MHF. As a result, the present model can simulate the entire boiling regime including the CHF and MHF, and evaluate the contributions of pure nucleate boiling heat transfer, massive bubble heat transfer, and film boiling heat transfer in each boiling regime. The predicted boiling curve agrees well with the experimental data of Dhir and Liaw in a qualitative manner. However, the area fraction of large dry patch and the degradation factor of massive bubble in the
present model should be further developed in order that the present model be applicable to wider range of boiling surface condition.
