Direct-injection diesel engines have expanded its market share owing to the benefit of fuel economy. However, emission regulation for smoke and NOx is getting more stringent, which resulted in many researches for the reduction of those emissions, including nozzle geometry, high pressure injection, EGR, multiple injections and alternative fuel. Among these suggested solutions, multiple injection and JP-8 as an alternative fuel were chosen as the most promising strategies to reduce not only smoke and NOx but also HC in this study. To figure out the effect of multiple injection strategy, heat release rate analysis, direct imaging and two-color thermometry were applied to characterize the combustion process. For JP-8 application in a diesel engine, macroscopic image analysis by Mie-scattering visualization was added to the method applied for multiple injection study.
Smoke and NOx could be reduced when single pilot injection strategy was applied with diesel fuel. Pilot injection with earlier injection timing over 40 BSOI decreased smoke and NOx more dramatically due to the combustion with partially premixed charge compression ignition. However, HC emission was produced more with single pilot injection due to wall wetting. Double pilot injection was applied for the further reduction of smoke and NOx. Smoke and NOx could be reduced by 84%, 73%, respectively because more homogeneous charge was formed. HC emission with double pilot injection also decreased more than that with single pilot injection due to reduced wall wetting with shorter spray penetration. From direct imaging analysis, it was shown that flame luminosity was detected at an earlier crank angle when single pilot injection quantity increased. Flame development was more active during initial combustion, showing higher luminosity intensity. However, flame started to disappear at an earlier crank angle with higher dissipation rate. This phenomenon can be explained by “entrainment wave”. Rapid leaning after end of injection near injector enhanced the oxidation of smoke at a later stage of combustion. This happened more actively with higher pilot injection quantity. With single pilot timing variation, flame luminosity intensity was kept at a lower level and maximum flame luminosity intensity was low over the whole combustion process as single pilot injection timing was advanced. In addition, maximum flame intensity decreasing rate was the highest with the most advanced pilot injection timing, implying more active smoke oxidation process. The result from two-color thermometry showed that the area with KL factor reduced more and KL factor with lower value were distributed more as more fuel was splitted into pilot injection and pilot injection timing was more advanced. This experimental condition also showed that less pixel with temperature profile was presented and flame area with lower temperature value was more distributed. This analysis of direct imaging and two-color thermometry revealed the NOx and smoke emission trends for various multiple injection strategy.
For the application of JP-8 in a diesel engine, it was found that the spray tip penetration of JP-8 was shorter than that of diesel fuel by approximately 16% when the injection pressure was 30 MPa, while the difference in spray tip penetration decreased to 10% with increased injection pressure at 140 MPa. On the other hand, JP-8 showed wider spray angle than diesel fuel. The difference in spray angle of JP-8 and diesel fuel decreased as injection pressure increased, from 15.9° at an injection pressure of 30 MPa to 6.2° at an injection pressure of 140 MPa. The surface tension between the spray periphery and ambient air is reduced owing to these fuel characteristics, which yields instability near the nozzle hole exit in the shear layer between the spray and the ambient gas. The vortex induced by the instability is expected to enhance radial dispersion and result in a higher ambient air entrainment rate. These characteristics might contribute to higher fuel-air mixing rate and finally improved atomization, resulting from shorter spray tip penetration and wider spray angle. Moreover, lower distillation temperature is expected to have improved evaporation characteristics compared to diesel. From the combustion results, the peak heat release rate was higher and the premixed burn portion was larger with JP-8 due to its superior mixing rate through faster vaporization characteristics. Furthermore, ignition delay with JP-8 was longer than that with diesel fuel due to the lower cetane number of JP-8. In terms of emission, JP-8 showed a benefit in smoke reduction while it produced larger amounts of HC and NOx. From the analysis on combustion process of the direct images, it was verified that JP-8 had a longer ignition delay compared to diesel regardless of injection pressure. However, flame luminosity of JP-8 was vanished more rapidly. The flame luminosity intensity analysis showed that diesel had stronger flame luminosity overall and duration of visible flame luminosity was longer than JP-8. This implies that diesel had more diffusion dominant combustion. From the flame luminosity variation rate analysis, decreasing rate of flame luminosity for JP-8 was higher compared to diesel, showing that oxidation rate of JP-8 was much higher than diesel. The flame temperature field from two-color thermometry showed that locally high temperature region existed with JP-8. KL factor distribution of JP-8 was distributed more uniformly with a relatively lower level of KL intensity in comparison with diesel in the late stage of combustion.
