User research has become a commonplace for reasons. For the better understanding about users, many user research methods have been developed so far. However, interpretation, process that takes researcher from data to conclusion has received little attention in literature on design research. Meanwhile, as focus of research shift from work efficiency to aspects of everyday life and emotion, new user-centered design methods appeared such as cultural probe. Unlike existing social science-based interpretation approach which pursues correct understanding about users through systematic inductive reasoning, art-based cultural probe asked researchers not to analyze probe returns but to use value of ambiguity through the process like making gossips about users from user data. With the appearance of probe, this tension has become issue around interpretation. So far, literatures on this issue have much focused on perspective of each tradition on interpretation. However, there’s still lack of understanding about how these two approaches actually affect user data use and interpretation results such as insights and initial ideas in practice. In this paper, we investigated typical interpretation process in each tradition. Then, we explored how two approaches affect design process until building initial ideas through the workshop. With the workshop results, we particularly compared them in terms of patterns of user data use, team dynamics, and the number of idea. We expect that the result of this research will let designers and researchers have deeper understanding about interpretation process and will give methodological reflection for further development of interpretation approach for effective user research process.
사용자 중심 디자인 및 사용자 조사는 디자인 분야에서 널리 활용되어지고 있으며, 이에 따라 다양한 사용자 조사 방법이 개발되어 지고 있다. 하지만, 이에 비해 사용자 조사 후 나온 데이터를 컨셉개발을 위해 효과적으로 다루는, 사용자 조사데이터를 결론으로 이끌어 나가는 해석단계는 주목받지 못하였다. 하지만 이 단계는 단순히 사용자에 대한 정확한 이해를 하는 것에서 나아가 디자인 분야에 특성에 맞게 디자인 아이디어 전개를 위한 인사이트를 형성하는 등의 다양한 역할을 수행하는 단계로써 그 중요성이 인식되어야 한다. 한편, 디자인 분야는 다학제적인 학문으로써, 사용자 중심 디자인 분야 안에서도 사용자의 이해를 바탕으로 좋은 컨셉을 개발한다는 같은 목적 아래 해석단계에 대한 서로 다른 시각이 존재한다. 특히, 예술 전통 기반의 컬쳐럴 프로브(cultural probe)라는 사용자 조사 방법론이 등장하면서 기존의 지배적이던 사회과학 기반과 다른 해석단계에 대한 관점을 주장하여 해석단계를 둘러싼 이슈가 제기되었다. 하지만, 현재의 논의는 상이한 관점차이에 대한 주장에 그치고 있다는데 한계가 있으며, 실제로 디자인 과정에서 디자이너의 활동 및 결과물 도출에 어떠한 영향을 끼치는지에 대한 실증적 연구가 부족하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 서로 다른 학문적 전통을 기반으로 한 해석과정의 차이가 사용자 조사 데이터를 활용한 디자인 과정에서 초기 아이디어 형성에 까지 미치는 영향을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 통해 디자인 분야에서의 해석단계에 대한 이해를 높이는 한편, 목적에 알맞은 해석 방법을 선택하거나 기획하는데 있어 기초 연구를 마련할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.
