In this thesis, we propose several energy efficient scheduling techniques for low latency and high throughput in WSNs. First, we propose energy efficient scheduling for data aggregation scheme. The data aggregation scheme of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can reduce the number of transmitted packets by aggregating multiple packets in one packet; thus, it can reduce energy consumption at the same time. However, the energy consumption of idle listening in WSNs remains dominant in the total energy consumption for WSNs. Therefore, the duty cycle MAC protocols have been used to reduce idle listening. However, if aggregation is used on duty cycle MAC protocols, it has very low performance caused by the latency of the sleep-wake scheduling. The goal of the present work is to design energy efficient event-aware MAC scheduling that can be used by a data aggregation technique. In order to aggregate the packets spatially and temporally, two corresponding mechanisms are proposed: the event-aware and energy-aware routing (EE routing) protocol at the routing layer, and the aggregation scheduling MAC (A-MAC) protocol at the MAC layer. The EE routing protocol chooses the best path for better aggregation and for energy balance in WSNs. The A-MAC protocol adjusts schedules to aggregate more packets while maintaining a low latency. The performances of the proposed protocols are evaluated through ns2 simulations. The results indicate that the proposed protocols reduce energy consumption by 80-90% and have balanced energy consumption while maintaining similar latencies and aggregation rates compared with previous aggregation protocols.
Second, we propose energy efficient scheduling of the listening times of synchronous protocols. Synchronized sleep-wake scheduling is widely used in energy-constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, this type of scheduling incurs an additional delay, called the Next Node Transmission Delay (NNTD), in waiting for the next hop node to wake up when an event occurs unpredictably. In this chapter, we propose multi-channel grouping (MCG) that minimizes the latency by grouping the nodes, dispersing the listening time for each group, and transmitting the data packets to the group that wakes up first in WSNs. In this study, groups are established over the whole nodes in a distributed manner. To reduce the NNTD and to avoid a collision among groups, we allocate different listening times and different channels for each group. Each node maintains the listening times of neighboring nodes in order to find the node that wakes up earliest. To reduce the additional memory and energy consumption that is consumed in the maintenance of multiple listening times, all nodes are synchronized to the same time and turned on during a predefined time for each group. We implement MCG in an ns2 network simulator and in a 13-node sensor network. Our extensive evaluation shows that synchronous protocols with MCG significantly outperform native synchronous protocols.
Lastly, we propose energy efficient schedluing for multimedia data. Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) require high throughput to transfer multimedia data such as audio and image data without sacrificing energy efficiency. However, throughput is decreased by interference among segmented packets of multimedia data in multi-hop transmissions. In this chapter, in order to support multimedia data transmission with multi-hop sensor nodes, we suggest a multi-channel pipelined scheduling MAC (MCPS-MAC) protocol. To maximize the throughput, we use a multi-channel approach. Although there were several approaches that use a multi-channel approach to increase the throughput, these approaches have low throughput and high latency with a small number of multimedia packets in a multi-hop transmission. We transfer the data packets in a pipelined manner to increase the channel usage even with a small number of multimedia packets. By reserving the multi-channel schedules in the listening time, nodes can wake up and send data packets according to the schedules with pipelined manner in the sleeping time, thus achieving high throughput, low latency and low energy consumption. In addition, we suggest a multi-route scheduling mechanism to fully utilize the sender`s bandwidth in spite of having a single transceiver of sensor nodes. In an ns2 simulation and in a 16-node sensor network, the results show that the MCPS-MAC protocol fully utilizes the sensor`s throughput in a multi-hop transmission, with much lower energy consumption.
