Clathrate hydrates, commonly called gas hydrates, are non-stoichiometric crystalline inclusion compounds that are physically interaction between host-water molecules and relatively small gaseous/liquid guest molecules. In this study, I focused on four scopes; 1) environment and properties of natural gas hydrate in deep ocean sediments, 2) thermodynamics of clathrate hydrate at infinite dilution, 3) simple and general cage occupancy relationship of binary gas hydrate, and 4) clathrate hydrate with metal and radical guests and magnetic properties of clathrate hydrate.
First, we focused on the environment and properties of natural gas hydrate in deep ocean sediments. Anomalous chloride concentration enrichment has been detected in marine sediments comprising methane hydrates. In the present work, we designed an electric circuit system linked to the high pressure resistance cell in which the chloride ion concentration can be directly measured within reliable accuracy under in-situ conditions of the deep-sea floor pressure and temperature. We regulated the methane hydrate formation rate with 4 different interface areas between the sediment and bulk methane gas. We also related the volume of formed methane hydrate and chloride concentration, and assessed whether larger contact area yields a faster formation rate. Chloride concentration increased under a fast methane hydrate formation rate, but no noticeable concentration change was detected under a relatively low rate. Furthermore, we suggested that the methane hydrate formation rate must be maintained at least on the order of ~$10^2$ mol $m^{-2}$ $yr^{-1}$ so as to efficiently enrich chlorides and retain the acquired chloride level. The present experimental system does not fully reflect the relatively minor effective variables such as vertical advections in real system, but the results seem to be sufficient for revealing chloride enrichment phenomena induced by fast methane hydrate formation rate with free methane gas. The physical effects of chloride anions on the surface morphologies of methane hydrate formed in the sediments were additionally examined using a Field Emission-Scanning Electronic Microscope. We also studied the natural gas hydrate sample (Ulleung Basin, Korea) to observe behavior of interlayer cations in the sediment of natural deep sea and cage occupancy ratios of natural gas hydrates. Cage occupancy ratios of large cage to small cage were observed with very highly increased values in sediment rich part. It shows that the interlayer cations significantly affect the gas hydrate in real deep ocean as well as in artificial clay + methane hydrate. A considerable reduction of methane occupancy in sI-S was also detected for artificial MH formation in Na- or Ca-MMT, such that only 43% of the total sI-S cages were occupied when compared with pure MH. This implies that 10% of the methane contained in genuine sediments is reduced via intercalation. Moreover, the methane gas recovery mechanism must be reconsidered according to the effect of interlayer cations.
Second, we tried to determine thermodynamic equation for binary hydrate at infinitely diluted conditions. This study focused on the cage occupancy of guest molecules in the infinitely dilute state. At the extreme conditions of highly diluted guest concentrations the direct measurements of the cage occupancy ratio representing the competitive inclusion of multi-guest species appear to be so difficult because of spectroscopic intensity limitation, but its thermodynamic significance might be considerable due to the fact that the infinite-dilution value of the cage occupancy ratio can provide the valuable thermodynamic information as a very unique and guest-specific parameter. In order to experimentally identify gaseous guest population in structure I (sI) and structure II (sII) cages, we used the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gas chromatography, and direct gas measurements. Furthermore, we derived the simple and generalized thermodynamic equation related to cage occupancies at infinite dilution from the van der Waals-Platteeuw model. Both experimental and predicted values agree well within the experimental error range.
Third, we also tied to investigate the general and simple thermodynamic equation of binary gas hydrate for overall composition. The competitive inclusion behavior of multi-guests in the cages of clathrate hydrates is not yet well understood in spite of its significant importance in both scientific and technological fields. Here, we derive simple and generalized expressions related to cage occupancy ratios of binary clathrate hydrates, measure the cage occupancy ratios and finally compare the proposed expressions with the experimental results. The present approaches cover three independent categories; the binary guests competitively occupy (1) both small and large cages, (2) only small cages and (3) only large cages. In addition, we demonstrate that cage occupancy ratio is a simple but powerful variable that indicate the guest behaviors. More importantly, the present approaches only need to have the precise composition measurements to reveal the general nature of guest popularity in cages, while the original van der Waals -Platteeuw model requires several complex variables such as Langmuir constants and fugacities as indispensable prerequisites. The present outcomes might play a significant role in understanding guest occupancy details and, furthermore, provide clues for designing and synthesizing the most efficient hydrate structures to store gaseous molecules for a specific purpose.
Fourth, we focused on the unique hydrate with non-molecular guests such as radicals and metal ions. A hydrogen molecule entrapped in the cages of icy hydrogen hydrate is confined in host water framework and thus behaves unlike pure solid or liquid hydrogen. The $\gamma$-irradiated hydrogen radicals are for the first time observed from ESR and solid-state MAS $^1H$ NMR spectra to stably exist in the icy hydrate channels without any collapse of the host framework, confirming the chemical shift consistency of ionized hydrogen derivatives. We discuss the confined icy hydrate channels, which can act as potential storage sites for simultaneously imprisoning both molecular and ionized hydrogen and further as icy nano-reactors. Moreover, $Li^+$ and $Na^+$ cations entrapped in small cages of $LiSO_3CF_3$ + $D_2O$ + $C_2H_6$ and $NaSO_3CF_3$ + $D_2O$ + $C_2H_6$ hydrate systems were observed. In the results of $^7Li$, $^{23}Na$, and $^{13}$C NMR study, unique peaks were observed in the case of each type of nucleus, except in the hexagonal ice phase. While small lithium and sodium cations seem to be unfavorable for capture in hydrate cages, they might favorably migrate through pentagonal or hexagonal faces of cages. Also, these cations are not captured by common van der Waals interaction due to their size, but are stabilized via ionic interaction with pre-captured triflate anions. Also, finally, Magnetic molecules physisorbed into low-dimensional nanostructures of microporous materials such as graphite and metal-organic frameworks have been verified to exhibit an unusual magnetic behavior. We demonstrate that the selective injection of both magnetic and non-magnetic guest molecules into the water-ice cages of clathrate hydrates to form a 3D superstructure with tetra-hedral and diamond-like sublattices can modify the inherent magnetism.
