The detailed characterization of surface is not only of fundamental importance but also of interest for many applications. Using the quantum chemical calculations, a detailed knowledge of surface chemistry can be obtained at a molecular level. Research work in this thesis covers both popular quantum chemical surface modeling methods cluster and slab.
The geometric and electronic structures of small mercury clusters, $Hg_n$, $Hg_n^{+}$, and $Hg_n{-}$ (n $\leg$ 8) have been calculated using a density functional theory (DFT). The results indicate that as the cluster size increases, the lowest energy states of neutral and anionic mercury clusters prefer three-dimensional structure whereas those of cationic clusters are peculiarly linear structure due to $\It{s-p}$ hybridization. This structural feature has influence on the energetic and electronic properties of cationic clusters which deviate from the characteristics of van der Waals cluster. As the cluster size increases, energetic properties, binding energies per atom and second order difference in total energy of cationic clusters consistently decrease, in contrast to the neutral and anionic clusters. However, neutral and charged mercury clusters show common features in terms of size dependent transition of bonding character, such as the decrease of band gap and vertical ionization potential, and the increase of vertical electron affinity. These various properties are also qualitatively and quantitatively in line with the available experimental and theoretical results, implying the reliability of the ground state geometries of these clusters.
Quantum chemical calculations of the reconstruction structures of Ge(001) surface were performed using DFT method. Using both slab and cluster models, we have systematically investigated the proper simulation models which show good accordance with experimental structure factors of surface dimers. From this analysis, more than 8 layer slab and two-dimer cluster models are recommended as a Ge(001) surface. In particular, one-dimer model, $Ge_9H_{12}$, is not appropriate model with ab initio method to describe the dimer buckling.
The adsorption structures and energetic properties of methylthiolate, $SCH_3$, and butylthiolate, $CH_3(CH_2)_3S$, on the Au(111) surface are calculated using the DFT method. The most favorable adsorption site of both methylthiolate and butylthiolate is fcc-brd. Although the adsorption energy slightly increases with the chain length of the adsorbed alkylthiolates, overall structural energetic properties are almost same regardless of chain length. In order to consider surface reconstruction, we have also investigated the c(4 × 2) superlattice structures which have adatoms. By comparing the relative stability of reconstructed gold surface models to the former unreconstructed fcc-brd adsorption model, the most stable adsorption structure is the two RS-Au-SR complexes adsorbed in cis configuration. Due to the steric hindrance and lateral packing between alkylthiolate chains, the cis configuration is preferred by the trans one.
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of fluorinated alkylsilanes, [$CF_3(CF_2)_n(CH_2)_2SiCl_3$, FOTS, n=5 and FBTS, n=1], on the (111) surface of $\It{\beta}$-cristobalite have been calculated using DFT. In order to verify the relationship between stability and distribution of two types of covalent siloxane (Si?O?Si) bonds, anchoring bond ($Si_s$?O?Si) and cross-linking bond (Si?O?Si), we have calculated adsorption structures by considering various combinations of two types of cross-linking bonds. As a result, the presence of the lateral siloxane bond introduces a severe constraint to the structural relaxation; Si?O?Si bonds result in increase of the disorder and the decrease of the ratio of anchoring bonds to cross-linking bonds, $\It{R_{a:c}}$. Using the cluster model, the initial vapor deposition state of simple alkylsilane molecules were investigated. The adsorption energy increases as mono- < di- < tri- chlorosilane and tilting angle decrease in same order. We have also checked the inductive effects of $\It{\gamma}$-C in alkylsilane by analyzing the bond contraction. The most stable adsorption configuration of perfluoroalkylsilanes on quartz surface is structure which adsorbed to the surface by only anchoring bonds without lateral cross-linking bonds. Therefore, it is important to prevent the formation of lateral cross-linking bond when deposition process.
그 결과 Si-O-Si 결합이 증가할수록 전체 계의 무질서도가 증가하며 anchoring bond 와 cross-linking bond 비, $\It{R_{a:c}}$, 는 감소하였다.
