Li rechargeable battery is the most promising energy storage device due to its high energy density. Current Li rechargeable battery technology is sufficiently suitable for the application of energy storage device of portable electric devices, however, further investigation is essential for the higher power and energy density applications such as electric vehicles, power tools, and large scale energy storage system. Recently, investigation of nanostructured electrode materials gets much interest due to its nanoscale dimension often offers superior battery performance such as high specific capacity, rate capability, and cyclability originated from improved electrochemical activity, enlarged interface contact area, facile Li ion and electron conduction, and better stress accommodation. In this thesis, fabrication and electrochemical characterization of nanostructured electrode materials is investigated for both anodes ($TiO_2$, $ZnMn_2O_4$) and cathodes (amorphous $FePO_4$, $FeF_3$).
Novel fabrication strategies for the nanostructured electrode materials are developed by using, modifying, or combining nanofabrication techniques such as self-assembled peptide templating, atomic layer deposition, hydrothermal synthesis, and mineralization. The fabricated nanostructured electrode materials exhibit excellent battery performance, which means that the fabrication strategies are beneficial for investigating electrode materials for the next-generation Li rechargeable batteries.
Nanostructured anatase $TiO_2$ is fabricated by atomic layer deposition of $TiO_2$ onto self-assembled peptide template. The fabricated nanostructured $TiO_2$ has unique morphology composed of three-dimensional network of individual hollow nanoribbons. It shows excellent high rate performance compared to spherical $TiO_2$ nanopowder indicating that controlling the morphology as well as nanoscale dimension is important on battery performance.
$ZnMn_2O_4$ nanorod is fabricated from isostructural $$\beta-MnO_2$ nanorod precursor prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. $ZnMn_2O_4$ phase is formed after the solid-state reaction of the $$\beta-MnO_2$ nanorod and $Zn(CH_3COO)_2$. The fabricated $ZnMn_2O_4$ nanorod can store Li ions with high specific capacity and its high specific capacity is still sustained even at high current rates. Furthermore, reaction mechanism of $ZnMn_2O_4$ anode is experimentally identified by using $\It{ex-situ}$ X-ray diffraction analysis.
Two types of nanostructured amorphous $FePO_4$ ($\It{i.e}$, nanotube and core-shell nanowire) are fabricated by using mineralization of $FePO_4$ onto the self-assembled peptide template or carbon nanotube template, respectively. Amorphous $FePO_4$ nanotube shows relatively high specific capacity, however, its high rate performance needs further investigation. Core-shell nanowire composed of carbon nanotube core and amorphous $FePO_4$ shell shows better performance even at high current rates because of improved electron transport.
Lastly, nanocomposite of $FeF_3$ and carbon nanotube is fabricated by using surface nucleation of $FeF_3$ onto the surface of carbon nanotube. When operation voltage range is in both intercalation and conversion reaction region, the nanocomposite shows high specific capacity, but it shows poor capacity retention and energy efficiency, which are general drawbacks of conversion reaction. Therefore, operation voltage is controlled to only intercalation reaction region. As a result, the specific capacity is decreased, however, it is still higher that that of conventional cathode materials such as $LiCoO_2$. The nanocomposite retains its high specific capacity even at high current rates with excellent capacity retention.
To summarize, nanofabrication techniques are widely investigated to fabricate various material systems, such as single-component metal oxides ($TiO_2$), multi-component metal oxide ($ZnMn_2O_4$), metal phosphate ($FePO_4$), and metal fluoride ($FeF_3$). The fabricated nanostructured materials show excellent battery performance, especially at high current rate, as the electrode materials for Li rechargeable battery. These results indicate that the strategies for nanofabrication suggested in this thesis are very promising to investigate nanostructured materials with high performance for not only Li rechargeable battery but also vast applications for the future technology.
