This study focuses on the technical aspects related to the yields of water and electricity from the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell using dry or slightly humidified hydrogen streams. Useful guidelines could be developed for increasing the limiting current density (i.e., amount of drinking water from PEM fuel cell is proportional to the current density) and the amount of available drinking water from PEM fuel cells at steady state under single- and two-phase flow conditions.
First, the removal of excessive liquid water accumulation in the gas flow channel and in the gas diffusion layer is important to increase the limiting current density, since excessive liquid water limits the ability of the fuel cell to increase its current density and water production. This study focuses on increasing the limiting current density by the use of design modifications to the arrangement of the micro-porous layer (MPL). The relationship between electrochemical losses and the arrangement of the MPL in PEM fuel cells was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The net water flux across the polymer membrane was investigated to ascertain the water transport in PEM fuel cells according to the arrangement of the MPL. The results indicated that a fuel cell with an MPL only on the cathode has an increased water flux from the cathode to the anode compared to cells with MPLs on both electrodes and cells without MPLs. Resistances to the mass transfer of oxygen are lower in cells that have an MPL on the cathode than are the resistances in the other two types of cells, which means that the molar concentration of oxygen at the reaction surface of the catalyst layer with an MPL on the cathode is higher than that of cells with MPLs on both electrodes and cells without MPLs. This indicates that the MPL forces the liquid water from the cathode side to the anode side and decreases the liquid saturation in the gas-diffusion layer at high current densities. Consequently, the MPL helps in maintaining the water content in the PEM fuel cell and decreases the resistances to cathode charge transfer and oxygen transport, even when the hydrogen inlet has a low relative humidity. This leads to higher limiting current density due to excessive liquid water removal, which results in higher water production due to higher current density.
Second, minimal use of humidification (i.e., dry or slightly humidified gas streams) is desirable for significantly increasing the amount of drinking water from PEM fuel cells without affecting electrical power productivity by low humidification. However, when a PEM fuel cell operates with dry or low-humidity gases, the result is significantly decreased cell performance due to increased ohmic resistance. Specifically, the influence of the humidification condition at the cathode on current variation was more important than the humidification condition at the anode. The humidity of the air at the outlet ($RH_{c,out}$) is greatly dependent on operational parameters, such as air inlet humidification ($RH_{c,in}$), air stoichiometry, air pressure, and operating cell temperature. When the inlet air stoichiometry is normally determined in range of 2-4, the appropriate $RH_{c,in}$ is 50% to ensure sufficient water content in the polymer membrane and stable cell performance. If $RH_{c,in}$ is less than 50%, air pressure should be increased to maintain sufficient water content in the polymer membrane. This is important because the mole fraction of water vapor in the exhaust air decreases as total air pressure increases. However, additional power is consumed to increase the air pressure when a fuel cell must be operated at higher air pressure. Thus, voltage gains and losses associated with increasing the air pressure should be considered. There is always a net voltage loss when air pressure increases, but the pressurization process is required to provide sufficient drinking water (over 10 L/d) for the household. For the low $RH_{c,in}$ condition, the pressurization process does not materially affect the amount of drinking water produced by a PEM fuel cell. However, for a high $RH_{c,in}$ condition, the mass of the input water is decreased significantly as air pressure increases. However, feeding water for humidification at a high $RH_{c,in}$ condition is not greatly reduced for an air pressure greater than 3 atm. Additionally, it is evident that, above $60\degC$, the amount of available drinking water decreases markedly, since saturated vapor pressure increases more and more rapidly above this temperature, which means that the partial pressure of dry air and $RH_{c,out}$ decrease significantly.
Third, the critical point at which the liquid water removal rate equals the liquid water production rate is strongly dependent on cathode inlet humidity, air stoichiometry, air pressure, and water transport (i.e., net water drag) across the polymer membrane at a given operating cell temperature. Under threshold current density (i.e., the current density at the onset of the two-phase operating regime in which liquid water first starts to appear at the catalyst layer), for a fully-saturated air condition, the liquid water can be removed sufficiently in the gas flow channel when air stoichiometry is lower than 4. The required air stoichiometry at the critical point decreases with decreasing $RH_{c,in}$. When the net water drag coefficient is less than -0.1, however, the required minimum air stoichiometry at the critical point is less than 2. If air stoichiometry at the critical point is less than 2, the result is an insufficient oxygen concentration for the oxygen reduction reaction at the catalyst layer. This problem can be solved by increasing the air pressure due to higher liquid water production. However, even though air pressure is 2.5 atm at a net water drag coefficient of -0.27, optimal air stoichiometry at the critical point remains less than 1. The low net water drag coefficient should be increased by increasing the humidity at the anode inlet. Even though the amount of water feeding for anode humidification must be increased to increase the net water drag coefficient, the amount of available drinking water is not significantly decreased due to the low hydrogen flow rate and the low hydrogen stoichiometry.
