The shear wave velocity (Vs) profile is one of the essentially required characteristics of the site for static deformation analyses as well as for earthquake ground response analyses. Various seismic surface wave methods are widely used for site characterization. Recently there has been growing interest in Vs subsurface imaging especially using surface wave methods. Each method has its own characteristics in field testing and data analysis. Therefore, it is very important to recognize the reliability and applicability of each seismic test used in the project. In practice, their characteristics and limits of their application have not been considered properly, leading to inaccuracy and incongruent results in the projects.
Generally, surface wave methods have been applied to ground and soil structure system with fundamental assumption that the evaluated system consists of a set of homogeneous layers of constant thickness. In reality, however, such ideal conditions cannot exist. One of problems is horizontal variation of underground stiffness. Many researchers studied on the effect of non-homogeneity and evaluation of 2 dimensional Vs imaging. However, field verification studies were not satisfactory as it was difficult to know reliable reference Vs values of experimental site for comparison purposes. Moreover, researchers have focused on verification of its reliability in constructing a two-dimensional Vs image. But it was nearly impossible to know the exact two dimensional reference values of the experimental site. To verify the applicability of surface wave methods, reference information of the site is required to be known in the field. In this study large scale model testing site was constructed to verify the reliability of the surface wave methods more definitely, especially HWAW method. The approximate size of the model testing site is $16m\times26m\times8.5m (W\timesL\timesH)$ and the testing site consisted of four-layered model and each layer had different material properties. Inclined layer boundary was included to focus on two dimensional imaging as well. The distribution of Vp, Vs values of the model testing site were estimated from using 140 buried geophones as reference values for verification study. Seven Vs profiles and a two-dimensional Vs image were produced by conducting the HWAW method on the testing site. Other field seismic methods such as down-hole, SASW, and MASW methods were also performed for comparison purpose. By comparing Vs values produced by field seismic method and reference Vs values of the testing site, practical feasibility of the HWAW method could be discussed effectively and it can be mentioned that the HWAW was somewhat superior to others in subsurface imaging.
Another major difficulty in performing surface wave method in practice is the application to geotechnical structure of various sections and finite boundaries. Specific geotechnical structures and grounds, such as cut slope, dam, and levee, have inclined surface and finite boundary. Especially, dams have such geometric characteristics as horizontal variation of component materials (core and rock-fill zone) and finite boundaries with sloping surfaces. Surface wave propagation influenced by reflection and interference of waves from different boundaries could result in distortion of the dispersion curve and subsequent fatal error in Vs profile. In current seismic evaluation for rock-fill dam, the Vs profiles of specific zones are seldom determined by seismic testing methods because the borehole seismic method is often restricted in application, due to the concerns of potential leakage and corresponding dam security, and surface wave methods are often limited by unfavourable in-situ testing conditions. Consequently, seismic response analysis of rock-fill dam is performed using the assumed Vs values or an empirical equation. Although aforementioned difficulties exist in surface wave testing, for reliable analysis of those structures, it is necessary to obtain representative Vs profiles by in-situ seismic tests. Therefore, it is of interest to understand the reliability and applicability of the surface wave method when it is applied to the dam and levee structures by performing accurate 3D numerical modeling and in-situ tests. In this study, numerical study was performed to verify the applicability of surface wave method in levee and dam. 3D numerical model of levee and dam were constructed. In case of levee, by simulating various surface wave methods using several input parameters, accuracy and applicability of each method was discussed. In case of dam, the surface wave method on a material with a finite boundary with surrounding materials was simulated for application to the evaluation of core stiffness by testing on the crest of dam. Therefore, comparative analysis was performed with two types of input parameters. One is a model of uniform lateral composition, which is representing fill dam and CFRD. The other is a model which includes stiffness contrast between core and rock-fill material, simulating earth core rock-fill dam. The shear velocities in the rock-fill zone were assumed to be bigger than those of the core zone, to represent the stiffness contrast between core and rock-fill material. By simulating various surface wave methods with several input parameters, applicability and limitation of each method was discussed. Additionally, using the results of numerical analysis, accuracy of Vs profiles by field surface wave methods was verified.
