Design concept screening and development phase is the process of screening possible concepts with some criteria to ensure project success and promising outcomes. This phase is critical because the design direction and the chosen concept are forecast and established for further development. Concept selection is, however, mostly dependent on the designer’s intuition and systematic design methods are mostly absence as concept development progresses. This research introduces an interview method for getting rich feedback to help designers screen the concepts reflecting participant’s needs with more certainty. Ambiguity of concept representation is applied to guarantee the possibility of wider interpretation and increase participation, immersion, and engagement of participants. The ambiguity method involves creating concept representations at different levels of ambiguity, and exposing them to users while controlling the ambiguity level. Like the game ‘20 questions’, the ambiguity method enables participants to not only associate, and deduce, but also to have curiosity and then more actively take part in the interview. Interviews based on the case study enable concept evaluation of participant needs and help obtain rich feedback which can lead to improved concept direction. Variety of responses were obtained frequently answers related to participant needs and uncovered inspiring new ideas. In conclusion, this method can be effectively used as a systematic method and tool for design concept screening and the development phase. It is expected that designers can overcome an important difficulty and uncertainty in concept selection and utilize this research as a new participatory design method.
디자인 컨셉 선별 및 개선 단계(concept screening and development)는 초기 여러 아이디어들 중 프로젝트의 성공을 위해 가능성 있는 컨셉을 선별하고 구체화하는 단계이다. 이 단계의 결정은 최종 제품의 방향에 큰 영향을 미치고 결정 후에 되돌리기가 어렵기 때문에 디자인 프로세스 상에서 가장 중요한 단계 중 하나라 할 수 있다. 그러나 대부분의 디자인 결정이 디자이너의 직관에 의존하고 있으며 개선을 위한 체계적 방법이 부재한 실정이다. 본 논문의 목표는 컨셉 선별 및 개선을 위한 인터뷰에서, 조사 참가자들로부터 유용한 피드백을 얻을 수 있는 새로운 방법을 제안하고 효용성을 탐구하는 것이다. 연구에서는 유용한 피드백 유도를 위한 방법으로 모호성을 활용하는 인터뷰 도구를 개발하였다. 모호성은 다양한 해석의 여지를 제공하며, 참가자의 흥미를 자극하여 인터뷰의 참여도, 몰입도를 높일 수 있을 것이라는 점에 착안하여 본 연구에서 제안하는 방법의 주요 내용으로 활용되었다. 논문에서 제안한 모호화 방법(ambiguity method)은 컨셉의 표현 방법에 모호성의 정도 차이를 주어 표현 도구를 만들고, 이를 조사 참가자에게 단계차이를 주어 보여주는 방법이다. 대상을 모호하게 설명하는 이 방법은 스무고개(20 questions) 게임을 하는 것처럼, 듣는 사람이 다양한 연상과 추론을 하게하고, 더욱 흥미를 가지고, 적극적으로 인터뷰에 임할 수 있게 해준다. 디자인 프로젝트 사례적용과 실험을 통하여 모호화 방법의 활용이 디자인 컨셉 선별 및 개선에 유용한 다양한 관점의 대답을 이끌어내고, 조사 참가자들이 인터뷰에 보다 흥미를 가지고 몰입하여 참여하게 한다는 점을 발견할 수 있었다. 모호화 방법은 디자이너가 컨셉 선별 및 개선 단계에서 겪는 디자인 전개의 어려움과 불확실성을 해소할 수 있으며, 새로운 참여적 디자인 방법으로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
