Superconducting motors are typically AC synchronous motors that employ superconductor windings in place of conventional copper coil in their rotors. Due to superconductor’s zero electric resistance and high current density in a specified condition, superconducting motors have advantages in compactness, light weight and high efficiency. As superconductors show superconductivity only at very low temperature, cryocooling of superconductor coil in a rotor is a core technology for superconducting motors. Conventional cooling systems utilize circulation of cryogenic fluid such as liquid neon or helium, but it needs dynamic cryogenic sealing parts to recirculate refrigerant from the stationary cooling system into the rotating rotor. Heat loss can be generated due to friction and poor thermal insulation in the coupling part. Some inherent problems such as cryogen leakage may also occur because cryogen is used in this method. These problems can be overcome by using an on-board cryocooler in the rotor and furthermore, cooling efficiency is increased because cryocooler and superconductor coils are thermally connected directly. In this thesis, a superconducting motor with on-board cryocooler was developed and tested. The system is composed of the stator with conventional copper winding and the rotor with HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) coils and the cryocooler. The rotor is fabricated as the race-track coil with 2G (YBCO) tape on two bobbins that are in physical and thermal contact with the cryocooler while being rotated together. Bobbins and cryocooler’s cold head are situated in the cryostat and MLI (Multi Layer Insulation) is used. In the rotor, copper current lead is optimized to minimize heat invasion by joul heating and conduction from room temperature envionment. And bobbins are designed to be compatible with the coaxial structure of the cryocooler. An inline-type Stirling refrigerator with linear compressor is used as the on-board cryocooler and its cooling capacity is 5 W at 70 K. The whole integration of the system is carefully designed and fabricated for rotating stability. Several temperature sensors and voltage taps are installed to monitor the condition of the HTS rotor and cryocooler, and their signals are acquired by a bluetooth data acquisition system. Before the rotating test, several preliminary cool-down test is conducted and the thermal contact resistance of bobbin is improved about 4 times. Finally, the HTS motor is successfully operated with 90 rpm of rotating speed. In this rotating test, 50 A current is supplied to the superconducting rotor at below 80 K. But after a several test, Stirling refrigerator’s cooling capacity is decreased because self-weight of bobbin causes structural deformation and friction increase of displacer. Therefore PTR (Pulse Tube Regenerator) may be better choice for on-board cryocooler, or flexible thermal linkage must be implemented between the Stirling refrigerator’s cold head and the bobbins.
