In the real world, consumers make the purchasing decisions repeatedly. And initial choices influence subsequent choices. As suggested by Khan and Dhar (2006), prior virtuous acts activate the positive self-concept, and license more self-indulgent choices. In the current study, I propose that licensing effect can be moderated by self-construal, which refers to how people perceive themselves to be linked with other people. The study shows that interdependent selves select vice over virtue after self-control, but independent selves tend to maintain their prior choice. The moderating effect of self-construal is linked to greater motivation to maintain consistency of self-concept for interdependent selves than for independent selves. Additionally, expending higher effort for self-control justifies licensing effect, but low effort cannot boosts licensing effect. Therefore, interdependent selves select virtue over vice in the low effort condition even after virtuous acts.
