In this thesis, thermal imaging applications using polydiacetylene (PDA) supramolecules were presented. Four novel applications were studied in detail by using the thermochromic and thermofluorescence features of the PDA vesicles.
In the first phase, a temperature sensitive self-standing microchip platform was fabricated by using replica molding (REM) method. Functional three-dimensional (3D) micropatterns of diacetylene supramolecules embedded in a host polymer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), were successfully transferred from a SU-8 master. The measurements proved that a significant dimensional reduction of the prepared patterns due to curing process did not disturb the conformational structure of the micro-scale replicated features. Polymerization of the diacetylene vesicles using 254nm UV-light irradiation from the back-side of the transparent substrate induced blue color polydiacetylene (PDA) micro-images selectively in the molded areas owing to the sub- 300nm light blocking property of SU-8. Heat treatment to the chip caused a blue-to-red color transition of the 3D micropatterns and as a consequence, generation of fluorescence signal from the red phase was observed.
The second application covered an all-organic counterfeit detection label based on polydiacetylene (PDA) supramolecules. Distinctive chemical and material properties of PDAs comprised the signatures of originality and render a new generation, multi-step anti-fake inspection system. Replica molding method was used to fabricate 3-D patterns on the composite film of PDA and polyvinyl alcohol. The height and frequency of the patterns were particularly designed to match to the human tactile perception so that they were recognized as intaglio printings for tactile confirmation. The intriguing characteristics of as prepared 3-D structures: a) visible blue-to-red thermochromic transition b) photo-sensitivity to generate colored micro-patterns and c) thermally induced non-fluorescent to fluorescent switching with a peak at a specific wavelength accounted for the uniqueness of PDAs as new candidates for counterfeit detection material.
In the third section, multicolor transition of PDA-PVA composite film was used to demonstrate glass-type device, which was actuated by a microheater array. Ti-Au-Ti-Au (10-50-10-200nm) multilayer serpentine-type microheaters were fabricated on a Pyrex substrate of $800\microm$ thickness and preferentially top Au-Ti layer of the microheater-only regions were wet-etched in order to focus the generated heat on the microheaters rather than on the connection wires. Using this method, the ratio of the driving heat of the microheater to that of connection wire became 5 to 1. After applying 4V to the microheaters, the activated pixels shifted to red at a temperature of approximately $75\deg C$ while the background remained blue. When the applied potential was increased to 10V, the temperature of the activated yellow cells was measured to be about $180\deg C$. Although the cell to cell separation was just $200 \microm$, the red color of the non-active pixels near the high temperature region showed that they were well isolated from the activated micro-heater array. The low thermal conductivity of SU-8 layer between the cells (0.2W/Km) and heat localization property of the micro-heaters were shown to contribute to the minimization of the crosstalk effect among the micro-pixels. A new thermal device characterization method was implemented on the active pixels by fluorescence imaging. The results showed that the thermo-fluorescence property of PDA supramolecules constituted a very powerful tool of thermal distribution analysis in micro-scale.
The next phase of the current effort was focused on design and adaptation of a similar device to a flexible type. The microheater array was fabricated on polyether sulfone (PES) and the active layer was formed directly on the substrate. Together with the PDMS sealing layer at the top, the device thickness of less than $300 \microm$ was obtained. The pixel generation method was changed to front-side through-mask irradiation. Dynamic resistance fluctuation of the microheaters was shown to be negligible even for wide bending angles. The device structure then was modified to improve the adhesion of solid PDA-PVA film by introducing PDMS glue layer and bonding the thermochromic film on the PDMS.
The final application was dedicated to demonstrate a very powerful tool for thermal imaging in micro/nano-scale. Using the thermo-fluorescence feature of polydiacetylene (PDA) vesicles, which were embedded in a host polymer matrix, thermal stress due to semiconductor device failure was characterized. A simple cast-cure-operate-inspect process was followed from beginning to end. By this way it is a very simple task to keep the track of sub-micron size filament formation both at the electrode surface and hidden inside a ReRAM device structure using a conventional fluorescence microscope. The spatial resolution of the system was estimated to be less than a hundred nanometers.
