The identification of new organic semiconducting molecules has been a crucial factor driving improvements in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). Recently there has been increased interest in the stability and processability of OTFT devices, in addition to the conventional focus on device performances. Organic molecules soluble in organic solvents are promising materials for inexpensive device fabrication since they can be processed by simple solution techniques. To make new solution-processable organic semiconductors showing good stability and processability, we developed a core molecule containing soluble anthracene derivatives -TIPSAnt. We investigated potentialities of TIPSAnt as the core molecule and applied it to both small molecular systems and polymeric systems.
Firstly, we developed TIPSAnt and investigated the potentialities as solution-processable semiconductors. Triisopropylsilylethynyl derivatives were added at the 9,10-positions of anthracene for the solubility and crystallinity. The soluble anthracene core (TIPSAnt) is a potential precursor for the synthesis of novel semiconducting materials. Hexyl thiophene and phenylenevinylene derivatives were firstly introduced to TIPSAnt. TIPSAntHT and TIPSAntPV show the promising properties and potentialities for solution-processable semiconductors. Therefore, we propose TIPSAnt as a precursor of a new class of semiconducting molecules with desirable properties: solubility, high crystallinity in single crystal and thin film form, solution-technique processability, good optical properties, and electrochemical stability.
Secondly, we applied TIPSAnt into small molecular systems. Three new small molecules based on TIPSAnts containing thiophene, benzothiophene, and phenyl thiophene as end-cappers were synthesized. We revealed structural relationships of the molecules with TFT performances based on crystalline properties as well as thermal, optical, electrochemical, and morphological properties of these molecules. We could realize “bricklayer” stacking from TIPSAntPT by introducing bulky phenyl thiophene substituents and this is the first time realizing “bricklayer” stacking from triisopropylsilylethynyl anthracene derivatives. As a result, TIPSAntPT showed the highest TFT mobility of $0.063 cm^{2}/Vs$ as films and $0.12 cm^{2}/Vs$ as single crystals among three small molecules. In contrast, introducing rigid group as substituent led poor TFT device performances for TIPSAntBeT. Although the rigidity of substituents and large $\pi$-overlap area resulted in highly crystalline properties for TIPSAntBeT, lack of solubility and needle-like crystalline films affects the device performances badly. All TFT device performances and single crystal X-ray crystallography results were corresponded with AFM and XRD analysis.
Lastly, we applied TIPSAnt into polymeric systems. We have fabricated bottom-gate, top-contact TFT devices based on TIPSAnt incorporated polythiophenes - PAT4 to improve solubility, oxidation stability, and processability of polythiophenes for application in OTFTs. The improvement of TFT performances of PAT4 by modifying surface treatments and by applying post-annealing treatments corresponds well with optical and morphological properties. - (1) When more hydrophobic surface was used the film of PAT4 showed better smoothly connected crystalline grains at AFM images. (2) Post-annealing treatment makes PAT4 film to be formed more highly ordered $\pi-\pi$ stacking as confirmed with XRD and UV-vis measurements.{ As a result we could obtain high performance PAT4-based TFTs which showing mobility up to $0.058 cm^{2}/Vs$ and on/off ratio of $5 \times 10^{5}$. Very good absorbance and charge transport properties of PAT4 produced promising organic solar cell performance, with a PCE of 1.7%. We believe that this research provides valuable information on designing new solution-processable organic semiconductors.
