In this thesis, the flow boiling heat transfer mechanism in micro-channels has been experimentally investigated. The flow boiling heat transfer correlations for pure and mixed refrigerants in micro-channels have been developed according to the heat transfer mechanism. For this purpose, the flow boiling experiments were performed for various conditions with pure refrigerants (R123, R134a) and their mixed refrigerants in the single circular micro-channel of 0.19 mm ID.
The analysis of experimental data indicates that the heat transfer mechanism is divided into two mechanisms, namely evaporation heat transfer mechanism of thin liquid film around elongated bubbles and combined heat transfer mechanism of nucleate boiling and two-phase forced convection. The comparison between minimum heat flux for nucleate boiling and applied heat flux at low vapor quality gives the information that which mechanism is dominant. The minimum heat flux for nucleate boiling is calculated for pure refrigerant from the analytic equation of the wall superheat requirement for nucleate boiling with the two phase forced convective heat transfer coefficient. For mixed refrigerant, it is determined by multiplying the minimum heat flux calculated for equivalent pure refrigerant by a correction factor. If the minimum heat flux for nucleate boiling is larger than applied heat flux, the nucleate boiling is suppressed at whole vapor quality and the flow boiling heat transfer is governed by the evaporation heat transfer mechanism of thin liquid film. In the opposite case, the nucleate boiling occurs and the combined heat transfer mechanism of nucleate boiling and two-phase forced convection governs flow boiling heat transfer. The prediction method of the heat transfer mechanism is validated by the comparison with experimental data.
The flow boiling heat transfer correlations for pure and mixed refrigerants in micro-channels are developed on the basis of the heat transfer mechanism. The correlations are induced with experimental data by the analysis of each heat transfer mechanism and the introduction of appropriate non-dimensional parameters. Especially, the heat transfer correlations for mixed refrigerant are expanded from those for pure refrigerant with correction factors which reflect the reduction of heat transfer coefficients compared with equivalent pure refrigerant. The reduction in the flow boiling of mixed refrigerant results from mass transfer between vapor and liquid phases and inside each phase. The correction factors are obtained for each heat transfer mechanism by the thermal modeling and the analysis of the mass transfer effect.
