Disinfection is a basic effective method for resolving microorganism inactivation and it has contributed enormously to a dramatic decrease in waterborne diseases. The disinfection ability in clearwell is usually estimated by using CT value where C [mg/l] is residual disinfectant concentration and T[min] means a contact time. Furthermore, an integrated disinfection design framework (IDDF) approach composed of hydraulic characterization module, inactivation kinetics module and demand & decay module was introduced because the conventional CT method exclusively represents the conservative disinfection ability and both CT method and IDDF approach use a resident time distribution (RTD) curve to calculate hydraulic efficiency. Although the information obtained from the RTD curve is highly critical for taking into account, it cannot represent specific hydraulic characteristics. Hence, in an effort to solve this problem, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been efficiently utilized. In the past, previous CFD model was brought into play only just for analyzing flow pattern and calculating RTD curve. Recently, the use of advanced CFD model dealing with disinfectant decay, microorganism inactivation kinetics and hydraulic characterization, especially, for UV chamber, ozone contactor, and clearwell has been thoroughly discussed.
Typically, current scientific research into disinfection ability has mainly focused on developing such more accurate disinfection estimation methods as IDDF approach and advanced CFD model. However, a study for improving disinfection ability in the clearwell is also requiredby optimizing the clearwell from a disinfection point of view. There are three factors that affect the disinfection ability: hydraulic characterization, disinfectant decay, and inactivation kinetics. Among these factors, hydraulic characterization is considered as the overwhelming dominant factor because it appears to be easily the best factor to control in disinfection process. It is a comforting thought that altering the clearwell design can affect its hydraulic characterization in a way of increasing hydraulic efficiency. However, many studied methods which have been used to estimate hydraulic efficiency are black-box analyses. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a new hydraulic efficiency estimation method which shows local happenings and variations to improve hydraulic efficiency.
In this study, the internal short-circuiting estimation method (ISEM) is recently developed involving a new process of CFD which can estimate the local hydraulic dynamics in clearwell. Moreover, the factors which cause the increase in T10/T value with the length-to-width (LW) ratio were also examined by utilizing this method. What’s more, the effect of shape on the relation of LW ratio and T10/T is analyzed and the possibility of ISEM is carried out as a result of effectively implementing ISEM for the real clearwells.
As LW ratio increases, the internal short-circuiting index (ISI) which shows the amount of short-circuiting in ISEM is rapidly reduced in influent and effluent zones and presents an almost constant value in the channel zone since the recirculation and dead zones are reduced. Therefore, as the T10/T value reaches the maximum value, the ISI curve changes from a 'V' shape to a 'U' shape. Hydraulic efficiency is therefore improved, especially in the downstream portion of the clearwell. The smaller the shape ratio (width/length of clearwell), the lower the T10/T value is at the same LW ratio because the proportion of turning zone increases as the shape ration decreases, generating more boundary separation.
A large majority of clearwells must be modified while maintaining the original baffles, since they were built underground with materials as concrete. Therefore it is unreasonable to apply the previous research in clearwell modification which assumed that distance between baffles wasconstant. In this study, the ISEM, which has the advantage of being applicable under any conditions, is applied to evaluate modification of an A clearwell and to modify B and C clearwells with several unusual characteristics. After analyzing the hydraulic efficiency of theoriginal state and modifications that baffles, intra-basins and diffuser walls are additionally installed,it is critical to take ISEM into consideration and evaluate as well. Based on the results, the effects of intra-basin and diffuser walls on T10/T are derived and it proves that the application of ISEM can be a feasibility study.
The improvement represented in intra-basins is closelythe same as that in baffles. Additionally, short-circuiting in the effluent zone can be reduced by the average equivalent level in channel zone if an intra-basin is added in the effluent zone. However, the effect range is restricted to the next channel zone. In those circumstances, it ispossible that a diffuser wall can obtain a lower ISI in case baffles and intra-basins are installed. Apparently, an additional improvement of the T10/T value is expected since the T10/T value converges the maximum by using only the baffles.
