It is widely believed that Internet Protocol (IP) provides the only convergence layer in the global and ubiquitous Internet. Above the IP layer, a great variety of IP-centric multimedia applications have been being developed for broadcasting and telecommunication convergence services, called Triple-Play Service (TPS) including high definition IP broadcast video, bi-directional voice. As a result, ever large link band-width is required in every network domain, while guaranteeing controllable quality of service (QoS) in terms of the delay, throughput, and jitter becomes the fundamental capability of network elements. Due to the successful evolution of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) technology, the link capacity is sufficient to support the convergence services in the backbone and metro networks. However, the 'first mile' and 'last mile' networks are still bottlenecks between high speed local area networks (LANs) and metro networks. Even though market prevailing solutions such as digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable modem (CM) networks have evolved continuously, the network deployment area and link speed are restricted by the natures of physical medium.
Optical access networks aim to achieve the optimal network design, network engineering, and traffic engineering with using optical transmission technologies in order to effectively support IP-centric TPS services comparable cost to DSL. In so many solutions, passive optical networks (PONs) are believed to be the ultimate solutions because of the economical advantages achieved by fiber-sharing architecture and the flexibility in network deployment and evolution. The PONs can be categorized into time-division-multiplexed PONs (TDM-PONs) and wavelength division multiplexed PONs (WDM-PONs) based on the the logical link multiplexing method. However, the unique technological natures of both types of PONs affect the performances of TPS independent of the economical merits and the superiority of optical transmission. This comes from the fact that the properties of TPS applications have not been considered in the design of PONs and functionalities.
This dissertation studies the traffic engineering mechanisms for QoS provisioning in PONs which is the fundamental technical requirement to support TPS. This dissertation analyzes the unique natures of PONs and the effects of those on the performances of TPS. Then, the requirements of scheduling algorithms are defined and noble traffic engineering mechanisms which cover packet scheduling, bandwidth reservation/allocation, multicast management, and optimal bandwidth provisioning, and the design issues of evolutionary architectures are discussed.
Firstly, this dissertation defines the fundamental technical requirements of traffic engineering in the DBA agent of the OLT and the ONU necessary to support TPS in PONs. Secondly, this dissertation deals with time-slot reservation and allocation issues to guarantee fair link-sharing, full access service, and class-based differentiated services simultaneously in the upstream of TDM-PONs. In the first part, the deficit reservation-based dynamic bandwidth allocation (dr-DBA) algorithm is proposed. It aims to effectively support full access service and fair link-sharing in the inter-ONU domain by optimizing the time-slot bandwidth of ONU based on the excess time-slot provisioning (ETP) method. The ETP determines the time-slot bandwidth according to the service weight of ONU, load of ONU, and network load distribution. As a result, a large amount of cycle bandwidth can be provided to heavy-loaded ONUs in the feasible load range of ETP for short-term burst traffic, while fair-link sharing is strictly guaranteed by the weight-based ETP if time-slot reservation contention occurs.
In the second part this dissertation proposes an effective time-slot reservation mechanism, called service quality pre-engagement (SQP). The SQP utilizes the service work of selected traffic classes as the ETP reservation credit (RC), so that optimal class-based differentiated services are supported without time-slot overbooking and slow service tracking in ETP. By the adaptive time-slot reservation of the SQP, optimal excess time-slot is reserved in advance according to the change in traffic load of class traffic, and service reservation gap (SRG) resulting from the DBA is always minimized. In addition, the forward reservation classes (FRCs) of the SQP are selected by the simulated annealing process, called dynamic FRC selection, based on the load of class, ONU, and network. The proposed long-term dynamic FRC selection and short-term service work-based ETP reservation of the SQP compensate the defects of prediction-based reservation scheme, and guarantees the improved performances of class-based differentiated service, the primitive functionalities for supporting TPS in the data plane.
Then, this dissertation analyzes the effects of optical multicast traffic share in the downstream of PONs on the performances of TPS, and proposes an traffic share-based bandwidth allocation and traffic share-based multicast channels scheduling algorithm. In the first part a noble effective traffic share-based proportional bandwidth allocation (S-PBA) is proposed. Due to the optical packet broadcasting in the downstream of TDM-PON, multicast packets can be shared by a plurality of member ONUs in the optical layer. This property affects the fairness of link-sharing, even though the effective throughput of ONU increases. The proposed S-PBA guarantees the ONUs the strict fairness in terms of allocated transmission bandwidth by adjusting the bandwidth of unicast time-slot based on the effective multicast traffic share and service weight of ONU. In the second part this dissertation proposes proposes a hybrid WDM-PON, called S-WDM-PON, and optimal multicast channel scheduling algorithm to effectively support the broadcast video delivery service in the downstream of WDM-PONs. The S-WDM-PON introduces a broadcasting arrayed waveguide (B-AWG) to the WDM-PON, and employs the maximum share first reservation (MSFR) algorithm in the OLT in order to maximize optical multicast video share. The MSFR makes more shared broadcast videos to be always delivered by the shared downstream wavelength with using a dynamic channel type-swapping. Thus, broadcast videos can be delivered to the ONUs by the minimum link bandwidth in the distribution network, while minimizing the service interferences among applications. The extensive analytic and simulation results validate the effectiveness of proposed algorithm.
Finally, this dissertation discusses the design issues and features of the evolutionary PONs which combines the WDM and TDM technologies. The effectiveness of hybrid PONs is analyzed based on the network architecture, node configuration, and flexibility for network evolution, and a scalable WDM-based Ethernet PON architecture is proposed, and time-slot scheduling issue resulting from asynchronous operations between the tunable laser and reflective optical device is discussed.
The introduced framework and numerical analysis combined with simulation studies draw the conclusion that the class-based differentiated services, effective multicast management, and optimal bandwidth provisioning necessary to support QoS guaranteed TPS can effectively be guaranteed by the proposed traffic engineering mechanisms.
광 가입자 망 기술은 링크 공유 및 다중화 방식에 따라 AON (Active Optical Network), TDM-PON (Time Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network), 그리고 WDM_PON (Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network)로 구분된다.
