Needs for various multimedia applications requiring highly qualified services have been increasing and generating huge amount of Internet traffic. In order to support this trend, it is essential to develop an efficient and intelligent networking technology. Optical internet is a networking technology enabling to switch and transport optical packet-level data traffic beyond simple point-to-point transmission. It makes possible provide huge amount of traffic bandwidth and statistical multiplexing in optical signal level. These advantageous features of optical internet can provide highly qualified applications services to various customers and enable flexible and efficient network operation and management.
In order to build cost-effective optical internet, it is essential to study a guideline for optical system design which can achieve the target performance and to utilize the deployed systems to guarantee its initial performance under various network environment. For this purpose, we study a design framework and dimensioning issues for optical packet router, as a key networking element, in optical internet. This dissertation first introduces next generation optical internet architecture and requirements for the network. Design and dimensioning issues for optical packet router are also presented for economical optical internet system development. Network performance control mechanism is presented to maintain the initially designed target performance under dynamically changing traffic condition.
This dissertation mainly studies the following three topics: node dimensioning, FDL-based optical buffer dimensioning, and shared wavelength converter pool. First, we study node dimensioning including burst assembly process and link dimensioning. In order to suitably operate burst assembly process, a decision mechanism of burst assembly parameters is proposed to suggest their lowest boundary values for achieving the target performance. By taking blocking performance at both transport and control planes into account, the optimally required number of multiplexed wavelengths in a link is obtained to produce the lowest blocking performance.
Second, fiber delay line (FDL) based-optical buffer, which can dramatically reduce down high blocking probability, is studied. Based on performance comparison among different FDL buffers and resource reservation mechanisms, hybrid shared optical buffer is proposed to support service differentiation. On the other hand, note that the optimal granularity of FDL buffer which produces the lowest blocking probability is changed according to traffic amount. Once the FDL buffer has been installed, it is not easy to upgrade and manipulate the buffer to keep its initial performance according to changing traffic condition. Thus, a mechanism to achieve the optimal performance of the prefixed buffer under changing traffic load is also proposed by applying burst assembly process.
Third, an economical optical packet router architecture is studied. All optical processing system is regarded as an ultimate solution for optical internet, but there is still controversial discussion on pros and cons for transparent and opaque optical systems. Thus, as a near or mid term solution, an optical packet router equipped with shared wavelength converter pool with electrical buffers is proposed. Main advantages of this design is that this does not have costly dedicated wavelength converter for each wavelength, which can dramatically reduce down system cost while this router outperforms that with dedicated wavelength converters with FDL buffers.
A major contribution of this dissertation is to suggest design guideline for an efficient optical packet router to achieve the target performance with limited resources. Proposed network systems and related algorithms introduced in this dissertation are expected to be utilized by network operators who develop and operate cost-efficient and revenue generating network infrastructures. These are also expected to be used a reference for researchers and network venders who design and develop optical packet router systems.
