Congestion occurs when the amount of incoming packets excess the network resources such as the buffer space and the network bandwidth. Once it happens, the elapsed time that a packet is successfully delivered to a destination increases substantially in networks. Moreover, the throughput decreases due to the increase of delay and the retransmission of the lost packets. To avoid network congestion, the suitable congestion control algorithm for the various network environment should be devised. The main purpose of the congestion control algorithm is to utilize the network bandwidth highly with allocating the network bandwidth fairly to flows.
In this dissertation, we study on congestion control in two types of networks: single-hop wireless networks and multi-hop wireless networks. In addition, we also consider two types of flows: TCP flows and non-TCP flows for streaming applications. Lastly, we study the cross-layer approach for the power efficiency.
Considering the characteristics of networks and flows, we propose congestion control algorithms as follows:
First, we consider a congestion control algorithm over single-hop wireless cellular networks. The conventional TCP treats a packet loss as the incipiency of congestion. However, the wireless networks experience the packet loss due to wireless link error frequently. Then, even though congestion does not occur, a source unnecessarily reduces its transmission rate to avoid congestion and implements the retransmission. This causes the network performance to degrade significantly: low link utilization and severe unfairness. To solve this problem, for streaming realtime applications, which are mostly based on UDP, we propose TCP-friendly congestion control algorithm based on ECN messages. Through the ECN mechanism, we derive the congestion state irrespective of the wireless packet loss. Moreover, using TCP additive increase multiplicative decrease (AIMD) dynamic behavior on the average sense to set the transmission rate, we can achieve TCP-friendliness with providing smoothness. In the second section, besides the wireless packet loss, we also consider the unique characteristic of the single-hop wireless cellular networks, the variable capacity. To effectively use the limited network resources, the wireless cellular networks dynamically allocate the bandwidth to users. Then, each flows experiences the abrupt capacity variation. This may cause the severe congestion and the low link utilization without the adaptive congestion control algorithm based on the variable capacity. The proposed algorithm is based on the available bandwidth and the queue length. Moreover, we adopt Eifel algorithm to detect the spurious timeout due to the abrupt capacity decrease. The proposed algorithm for TCP flows is described as a discrete time model for the evaluation of the network performance. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves the performance of TCP in terms of fairness and link utilization.
Next, we consider the IEEE 802.11 multi-hop networks. These IEEE 802.11 multi-hop networks have the unique characteristic compared with the wired networks and single-hop networks: the number of backlogged nodes within the interference region indicates network congestion while the queue length at the specific node reflects network congestion. To estimate the contention state, we design the contention state estimator from the difference between the number of arriving data packets and the number of outgoing data packets during the control interval. With this contention estimator, we control the transmission rate for streaming realtime applications. The transmission rate is adjusted with the average TCP AIMD model that we proposed at the previous chapter. Since the transmission rate is adjusted the degree of increase and decrease according to the contention state, this algorithm is also suitable for the multi-hop networks. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm utilizes the link capacity more efficiently with providing the throughput smoothness as compared with the existing algorithms. In the second section, we study on fairness problem among TCP flows in the IEEE 802.11 multi-hop networks. The fairness problem is very serious because it can make some flows be starved over wireless multi-hop networks. Flows with different locations competing for the same wireless link may have very different perceptions on congestion in terms of packet delay and packet loss rate. Without any cooperation algorithm, some flows inevitably experience the larger time to deliver a packet to the destination and the larger packet loss rate due to interruptions by the other flows and the increased contention window of each node along the path. Then, they rarely obtain the link capacity. To improve fairness among flows, we introduce a new window control algorithm not only to support these starved flows, but also to guarantee fairness among flows. Furthermore, over wireless multi-hop networks congestion occurs at multiple nodes. Thus, we also propose a new method to detect the level of congestion based on the summation of the average window sizes of multiple flows. By modeling the proposed algorithm as the discrete time, we analyze the network performance. In particular, we also suggest the method how to set the value of $max_{th}$ for high link utilization. Through the various network topology, we compare the proposed algorithm with the existing algorithms in terms of fairness and throughput. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm supports the starved flows with providing fairness among flows over wireless multi-hop networks.
Finally, we study the cross-layer approach to improve the power efficiency. One of the most important researches in the wireless network is to increase the overall network throughput under the low power consumption. However, the existing layered protocol design does not improve the performance significantly. Thus, to increase the overall network throughput with decreasing the overall power consumption, the cross-layer approach between the physical layer and the transport layer should be considered. In case of streaming applications, the playout is additionally considered to achieve the high playout quality with high power efficiency besides the transmission rate control and the power control. First, we formulate the optimization problem and derive the optimal solution. Considering the smoothness of the playout rate and fast response of the transmission power, we propose the playout rate control algorithm and the power control algorithm. Through the playout rate control, we avoid the underflow and the overflow of the decoder buffer. Moreover, the high quality service is provided by coupling the playout rate with the power control. In addition, we propose the fair window control algorithm and the power control algorithm for TCP flows. In the proposed window control algorithm, the window size is adjusted in proportion to RTT for fairness. Through the analysis at the equilibrium point, it is explicitly shown that the proposed algorithm enhances the power efficiency. Simulation results illustrate that the cross-layer congestion control algorithm outperforms the other existing algorithm.
