Carbon-based nano materials, such as carbon nano tubes, fullerenes (C60) and graphene, have been attracted by various fields because their exceptional properties because of their exceptional physical, mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties. Graphene, 2-dimemsonal carbon nanostructure, is a basic building block of all other carbon nanostructures for graphitic material. Graphene have an about 10 times electrical conductivity to the silicon material and the property is independent of temperature. Since silicon-based semiconductor approached to the limitation in miniaturization of scale size, graphene is a strong candidate substituting for silicon-based semiconductor. In order to apply this structure to electronic devices, the fabrication of large sized monolayer graphene without any defects is necessary.
There are various methods to fabricate the graphene and many groups synthesize it simply, however many limitations on making graphene exist yet, which are fabricating large scale graphene without any defect and controlling chirality of edge. Many scientists applied a mechanical cleavage method from graphite and a silicon carbide decomposition method to the fabrication of graphene. However these methods are on the basic research stage and have a many drawbacks.
Thereupon, our group fabricated graphene through Thermoelectrical Pulse Induced Evaporation (TPIE) motivated by arc-discharge and field ion microscope. This method is using interaction of electrical pulse evaporation and thermal evaporation and useful to produce not only graphene but also various carbon-based nano structures including carbon nano tubes and onions at feeble pulse and low temperature.
During fabricating graphene procedure, we could identify the different conditions which are proper for forming carbon nano structures and graphenes. Structural properties of graphene fabricated by TPIE are investigated by high resolution transmission microscopy, Raman spectrometer, secondary electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Also, the carbon nano tubes synthesized by TPIE not only guided to understand how to make graphene but also showed the new growth behavior of them.
Since carbon nano-tubes are discovered, the growth mechanisms of carbon nano tubes which are an essential key to produce scale-up for industrial applications have been naturally attractive. Diverse growth mechanisms are proposed for the formation carbon nano tubes. The carbon nano tubes fabricated by TPIE could not be explained through prior theory, so in this report, we describe from the characteristics of carbon nanostructures and graphene to the fabricating process of graphene based on our results.
