The cryogenic containment system for storing and carrying the liquefied natural gas (LNG) is composed of the stainless primary barrier and the secondary barrier composed of glass composite sandwich constructions.
Because of the very low temperature of LNG (about -175℃), thermal residual stresses occur at the primary barrier as well as the secondary barrier, especially at the adhesive joint between the rigid glass fabric and the flexible glass fabric. This thermal residual stress is the main cause of the gas leakage of the secondary barrier of LNG containment system. The thermal residual stresses are dependent on the adherend material properties, adhesive shapes and the shape of structures.
In this study, the stress distributions at the secondary barrier of the cryogenic containment system were analyzed with respect to adherend material properties, adhesive shapes and system structures, from which the method for reducing the stress level and stress concentration was suggested. Also, smart cure cycles for adhesive curing have been developed to increase the adhesive joint strength of the secondary barrier using the DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) analysis and dielectrometry.
