In this thesis, we try to analyze the relationship between CDS premium and credit spread and also examine how changes in credit ratings affect CDS and corporate bond prices. We study the relationship between CDS premium and credit spread by using principal component analysis and regression analysis and use an event study to examine how CDS premium and credit spread respond to reclassifications in credit ratings. We find that CDS premium and credit spread are highly related but not equal on average. In addition, we find the credit rating is a significant determinant of CDS premium and both CDS premium and credit spread change around the time of a downgrade in credit rating.
