The AMHS(automated material handling system) composed of OHT(overhead hoist transport), OHS(overhead shuttle), and RGV(rail-guided vehicle) is one of the most representative aspects of successful 300mm wafer fabrication(FAB) lines. The success of FABs made AMHS to be spread to the other manufacturing lines of semiconductor industry such as electrical die sorting(EDS) lines. In the EDS line of this study, the standard unit of processing in the testing machine and transportation on the rail-guided vehicle(RGV) is a single wafer. And wafers are delivered between machines because there is no common buffer in the line but very small-sized individual input/output ports exist within each machine. The absence of common buffer and heavy transportation load caused by the single-wafer transfer make the sequencing and timing of testing machines and RGVs to be coupled tightly. In the tightly coupled system processing equipments and AMHS should be coordinated with great delicacy in an integrated framework.
This dissertation suggests a bottleneck-focused integrated planning, scheduling, dispatching and control framework for an automated EDS line which is a kind of tightly coupled systems. The sub-problems of the integrated framework are as follows. The first problem is planning and scheduling of the parallel machines. Arrivals of wafers are dynamic and known in advance and the production requirement of each product for every period is given. The objective of this problem is maximizing the on-time-delivery. The size of lots(number of continuous processing without setup change) and the sequence of lots of all machines are decided. We propose two heuristic algorithms for this problem.
Second, operational strategies and conflict-free control of RGV-based wafer handling system are developed. We suggest a free-ranging operational strategy in contrast to conventional zone-control policy. And we develop real-time graph-based traffic control algorithm for coordinating multi-RGVs on a bidirectional rail safely and efficiently without conflict.
Finally, we develop a bottleneck-focused real-time scheduling algorithm for an automated EDS line which is a kind of flexible flow lines. Deadlock prevention/avoidance rules are considered and a look-ahead dispatching rule for avoiding blocking and starvation is proposed.
