In the current engine, spark ignition(SI) and compression ignition(CI) engine, and newly developed engine, such as homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine and controlled auto-ignition(CAI) engine and so on, exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) is widely used to control the combustion phase and reduce the nitrogen oxide(NOx) emission. EGR is classified into internal exhaust gas recirculation(IEGR) and external exhaust gas recirculation(EEGR). IEGR gas, which is usually named as residual gas, is generated by trapped gas, which could not escape from cylinder during exhaust stroke, and back-flow gas, which flows back into cylinder from exhaust pipe during valve overlap duration. EEGR gas goes into the cylinder during intake stroke through the pipe, which is connected between intake and exhaust pipe or manifold. Combustion phase was controlled by EGR gas resulting from decrement of in-cylinder gas temperature and oxygen concentration.
In this study, the effect of EGR on DME HCCI engine was investigated and the operating region of HCCI engine with in-cylinder direct injection and EGR was also examined. EEGR, IEGR, exhaust throttled internal exhaust gas recirculation(ThEGR), which was controlled by exhaust throttle, and simulated EGR(SEGR) were applied. IEGR rate was measured under various operating conditions, such as valve timing, exhaust valve lift and exhaust throttle open ratio, by using in-cylinder sampling method during compression stroke. IEGR rate could be changed approximately from 8% to 40% by valve timing and exhaust valve lift. IEGR rate was increased by increasing valve overlap and pressure difference between exhaust and intake manifold. The exhaust camshaft with low lift and advanced exhaust valve timing were effective ways to change IEGR rate due to the increase of trapped exhaust gas in the cylinder. In DME HCCI engine, auto-ignition timing was retarded and burn duration was increased by EEGR while auto-ignition timing was advanced by IEGR due to its higher thermal energy. Because of higher thermal energy of IEGR gas, IEGR extended the lower load limit. On the other hand, EEGR extended the higher load limit due to dilution and charge cooling effect of EEGR gas, which was resulted from higher heat capacity during the combustion. The reduced exhaust pipe area by exhaust throttle increased IEGR rate due to increased exhaust pressure resulting in back-flow from exhaust pipe to cylinder. The effect of exhaust throttled IEGR (ThEGR) on DME HCCI engine was similar to the effect of IEGR by valve timing and valve lift.
SEGR gas, which was composed of nitrogen($N_2$) and carbon dioxide($CO_2$), and the change of intake temperature were used to clarify the effect of dilution, heat capacity and charge heating resulting from EGR gas. Auto-ignition timing was dependent on heat capacity of in-cylinder mixture and temperature. Therefore, $CO_2$ concentration in in-cylinder mixture, which represented the effect of heat capacity, was very important to control the auto-ignition timing in DME HCCI engine with SEGR. Burn duration was dependent on dilution, heat capacity and charge heating. However, charge heating effect was independent of both dilution and heat capacity effects.
Finally, the extension of operating region by in-cylinder direct injection and EEGR was investigated. In-cylinder direct injection made tardy combustion and increased indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) due to latent heat from evaporation of DME. Operating region could be maximized by direct injection with EEGR.
Through this thesis, IEGR rate under various valve events and the effect of EGR on DME HCCI engine were investigated and these results could be used as basic data for designing DME HCCI engine.
