The controversy of various theories on environmentalism became active with the urging voices against destruction of nature has naturally shifted to focus on sustainability. In this manner, many leading nations (such as U.S., Japan, Europe and etc.) are performing on-going research related to environment and are developing various environmentally-friendly technologies.
In this study the author researched the characteristics of sustainability commonly under use in various fields; then have gone through analysis and synthesis in order to re-establish the concept of ‘sustainability’ as the basic operation of this study. As a result, a three-clause sustainability model was presented with human needs as a core and the clauses of ecology, economy and social-culture. Through document research, the author found out the reason why the concept of this sustainability must be applied to human environment, and especially why it should be applied to working environments such as offices and factories where modern human beings spend most of their lives. Therefore, the author caught the concept of this working environment, and uses the model which classified in physical dimension of building and story to restrict the complex where it is most closely connected to the field of industrial design.
The author analyzed, focusing on framework, the twenty successful environmentally friendly buildings from US, Japan and Europe by using these models of sustainability presented for the preceding research, and using the result, the author arranged the actualization methods and characteristics of sustainability of buildings. Also the author found out that the present environmentally-friendly working environments within buildings are focused on the technical solutions such as ecological and environmental solutions thus was able to explain the need of improvement on social sustainability. In order to grope for the methods of improving social sustainability and to identify the present problems, in-depth interview was conducted with people working under environmentally friendly buildings and the building’s architect. As a result, the author figured out that the basic human satisfaction must be sought prior to unconditional technological application seeking efficiency. Therefore the author analyzed the cases of universal design, a method of achieving social sustainability, to suggest that the role of industrial design can ultimately be the alternative for restoring social sustainability.
Then the author presented the major checklists and a guideline classified by methodological characteristics for achieving sustainability which enables industrial design to be actively applied in practical cases, as a conclusion.
자연 파괴에 대한 본격적인 자성의 목소리와 함께 이를 해결 하기 위한 여러 가지 환경론에 대한 논의가 활발해 졌고 이는 ‘지속 가능성(Sustainability)’에 대한 관심으로 이어졌다. 이러한 맥락에서 현재까지도 미국, 일본, 유럽 등 여러 선진국에서는 환경과 관련한 다양한 연구와 함께 여러 가지 친환경 관련 기술을 개발하고 있다. 먼저 본 연구의 기초 작업으로써 `지속 가능성`의 개념을 재정의 하기 위해 다양한 분야에서 통용되고 있는 지속 가능성의 특징을 조사하여 분석, 종합하였다. 그 결과 인간 필요를 핵심으로 하고 생태적, 경제적, 사회 문화적 지속 가능성의 세가지 항목으로 구성된 지속 가능성의 모델을 제시하였다. 다양한 문헌 연구를 통해 이러한 지속 가능성의 개념이 무엇보다 인간 환경에 접목되어야 하는 당위성을 규명하였고 특히 현대인들이 하루 중 대부분의 시간을 소비하고 있는 장소인 오피스, 공장과 같은 업무 환경에 적용되어야 함을 파악하였다. 문헌 연구를 통해 이러한 지속 가능성의 개념이 무엇보다 인간 환경에 접목되어야 하는 당위성을 피력하였고 특히 현대인들이 하루 중 대부분의 시간을 소비하고 있는 장소인 오피스, 공장과 같은 업무 환경에 적용되어야 함을 규명하였다. 따라서 다음으로 이러한 업무 환경의 개념을 파악하고 이를 단지, 건물, 층의 물리적 차원으로 분류한 모델을 사용하여 가장 산업디자인 분야와 관계가 깊다고 판단된 건물 차원으로 분야를 좁혀 연구를 진행하였다. 미국, 일본, 유럽의 20여 개 해외 우수 친환경 건축물 사례를 수집하여 앞서 연구를 위해 제시한 지속 가능성의 모델을 활용하여 작성한 프레임웍을 중심으로 분석하였고 그 결과를 토대로 건물 차원의 지속 가능성 실현 방법과 특징을 정리하였다. 또한 각 특징들의 분포를 분석한 결과 현재의 건물차원의 지속 가능한 업무 환경은 주로 생태적, 경제적 관점의 기술적인 해법에만 초점을 맞추어져 있음을 밝혔고 보다 인간 중심의 균형적인 지속 가능성 실현을 위해 사회적 지속 가능성 개선의 필요성을 규명하였다. 그 결과 효율성 위주의 무조건적인 기술 적용보다 인간의 기본적인 만족감을 우선적으로 추구해야 함을 파악하였고 사회적 지속 가능성의 실현 방법 중에 하나인 유니버설 디자인 등의 사례 분석을 통해 기술적인 해법을 아우르는 산업 디자인의 역할이 궁극적으로 사회적 지속 가능성 회복의 대안이 될 수 있음을 파악하였다. 따라서 다음으로 앞서 정리한 현재 지속 가능성 실현 방법의 특징 별로 산업 디자인이 적극적으로 적용되어 실질적으로 반영될 수 있도록 디자인 시 주요 고려사항, 체크리스트, 디자인 가이드라인을 결론으로써 제시하였다.
