Acoustic brightness and contrast control, unlike most traditional 3-dimensional sound systems that spatialize virtual sound sources, aims to control the acoustic potential energy in a selected region using multiple loudspeakers. Its major applications include personal sound systems without headphones.
This thesis explores the potential of this technology for practical applications. To this end, we first define the problem of enhancing the acoustic potential energy of the 'bright' region using a circular array of 16 loudspeakers and derive its mathematical solution. Numerical simulations have shown that the location of the bright zone and the spatial resolution of the measurement points affect the overall performance of the system. Also, through three major experiments in real acoustic environments, we show that it is possible not only to obtain an acoustically bright region as predicted by the simulation results but also to manipulate its position.
Finally, we present a Max/MSP external object which features real-time implementation of the acoustic brightness control, thereby enabling the user to manipulate the location of the bright zone for artistic applications.
