In information-oriented society and media age, communication and information exchange are occurred by using a myriad of media devices, vigorously. And the hardware side such as gaining experience and feeling at first hand having been strong formerly has been rapidly changed into the software side such as giving user the sense of the real through reproducing virtual environment using digital devices now. Therefore, research and development of haptic feedback device, one of the technologies for virtual reality, will be sure to be needed in the future and be one of important projects which should be progressed for improving our life style.
Haptics is a relatively new field of study in the realm of sensory communications and has hit the mainstream. In 2000, there weren’t that many people who knew the word, “Haptic”. By 2004, any self-respecting gamer had it in a joystick at home, and cell phones buzzed. Haptic perception involves both tactile system through the skin and kinesthetic system of the position and movement of the joints and muscles, through the skin and the position of our fingers.
In this thesis, I proposed, fabricated, and evaluated large deformable micro thermo-pneumatic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane actuator in order to generate touch among tactile mechanism of human. The actuator is purposed to get over the limit range of the deflection, over 600 μm, even though device is made by micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication process and to generate enough activation force, over 3.6 mN to evoke touch sensation. After that, fabricated actuator is tried to apply to Braille code display device.
Proposed actuator consists of four parts: a working fluid ($3M^{\trade}$ PF-5060), a PDMS chamber (7 mm × 7 mm × 0.55 mm) that acts as a reservoir for the working fluid, a PDMS membrane (3 mm × 3 mm), and a resistive micro-heater. The working process of the actuator is that as increasing temperature at the resistive heater, a phase of the $3M^{\trade}$ PF-5060 filled in the chamber is changed into a vapor and generated high pressure makes large deflection of PDMS membrane. This deflected membrane evokes touch sensation to the fingertip by moving up and down periodically.
Designed actuator is fabricated through combining both bulk micromachining and surface micromachining. First, silicon dioxide layer on a silicon substrate is formed and patterned using furnace and reactive ion etching (RIE), respectively, to define a position of a dynamic dot. After that, the wafer is etched inside tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) to backside bulk etching, and Cr and Au are deposited onto the silicon dioxide layer using an e-beam evaporator and are patterned to build up the resistive micro-heater. In the next step, PDMS is coated for making specific thickness membrane. Finally the device is completed by bonding between a membrane and a chamber using an epoxy, after removing silicon dioxide and silicon.
In order to measure characteristics of fabricated actuator, four parts of experimentations are set up. For measuring generated temperature and VI characteristic of resistive micro-heater with respect to the applied input power, $LabVIEW^{\reg}$ software, NI cDAQ board (9172 board), 4-channal thermocouples input module (NI-9211), thermocouple, power supply (KEITHLEY Source Meter 2400), and a semiconductor parameter analyzer (Hewlett Packard 4156A) are used. Furthermore, 3-dimensional surface profiling system (SIS-1200) is also used to measure the PDMS membrane thickness formed by a variety of speed of spin coating. And digital camera is applied in case of measuring deflections of PDMS membranes. Finally, load cell (CAS BCL-1L), indicator (CAS CI-5010A), and micro stage for moving Z-axis are set up for measuring generated force of the actuator.
When the applied input power is changed from 0 to 1.78 W, the temperature of the resistive micro-heater increased from $25^\circ C$, a room temperature, to $115^\circ C$. Simultaneously, current measured by power supply of the resistive micro-heater also increases from 0 to 0.11 A. These results will be able to be effectively changed by changing the design of the resistive micro-heater.
Through spin coating, it is possible not only to fabricate thick PDMS membranes with thicknesses of over 450 μm, but also to make thin PDMS membranes that are under 10 μm thick. Consequently, the desired thickness of a PDMS membrane will be able to be produced by properly controlling the speed of spin coating, by changing the mixing ratio of PDMS base and agent, and by decreasing the viscosity of PDMS membrane as adding on diluents.
The maximum deflections of PDMS membranes are about from 1.23 to 1.37 mm over the silicon substrates, approximately. Moreover, the time required to reach the maximum deflection differs greatly when increasing the power from 0.75 to 2.5 W. The response time is found to increase with the applied input power. Although the actuator does not require large displacement, a slightly high input power is needed to realize a high performance of the actuator compared to the applied input power for attaining the targeted height, 600 μm.
Force of proposed actuator is generated up to about 200 mN. This force is as many as fifty times larger than aimed force, 3.6 mN. Therefore, it shows the possibility of evoking touch sensation sufficiently.
These results show that the proposed actuator can surpass the limit range of deflection and generated force in existing devices made by MEMS fabrication processes. Furthermore, the actuator is able to be applied to Braille code display device for conveying words and information to the visually and aurally impaired people through touch channel of human.
Initially designed Braille code display device embodied one Braille cell having 6 dots in the one substrate and can make sentences or words through rising Braille dot dynamically and successively. Thiev, howe, has thermal conduction problem of single silicon substrate and ineffective energy loss problem. For these reasons, the newly modified Braille code display device is proposed. In modified Braille code display device, insulating case and pins are added in order to insulate against the generated heat, allow interoperability with other modules, reduce energy loss, and convey accurate force to the fingertip.
In days to come, I expect the proposed Braille code display device applied thermopneumatic PDMS membrane actuator to benefit the aurally and visually impaired people as realizing the low manufacturing costs associated with batch fabrication, the reduced weight of the device, and also the ease with which it can be integrated into portable electronics, such as for the a keypad inside cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDA), and even touch screen as a tactile display.
