Materials with periodic nanostructures have a variety of uses due to their physical and chemical properties as well as their unique morphology. Catalytic support, tissue/cell culture and diagnostic assay systems are the well known applications of those structures. Especially, 2D and 3D periodic structures with photonic properties have received enormous attention as a basic substrate for future photonic devices. Periodic nanostructures composed of noble metals have strong localization and enhancement of electromagnetic field at the surface. From such origin, 1D and 2D periodic metal nanostructures have surface plasmon resonance (SPR) or surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties applicable to biosensors and plasmonic devices. Dielectric materials with 2D or 3D periodicity may have photonic bandgap (PBG) property. The electromagnetic wave which has frequency correspond to the PBG of given nanostructures cannot exist inside of them. It means that the white light (or electromagnetic waves with broadband spectrum) shinning on the PBG structures can be reflected selectively. It is well known that the PBG property (or selective reflection) of material is governed by several variables such as the lattice constant, crystal orientation and refractive index contrast between the structure and medium.
Here, I described a simple and facile bottom-up method for the fabrication of those multidimensional periodic nanostructures in the basis of colloidal self-assembly. Using selective photon-induced polymerization in colloidal crystal films, those nanoscale periodic structures can be patterned in micrometer scale. As well as the shape of resulting colloidal crystal patterns, their PBG properties could be tuned by pore size modulation. In addition, large-scale colloidal crystal films were generated by spin-coating of silica/ETPTA suspension.
Holographic lithography (HL) was used as a top-down approach for the fabrication of multi-dimensional nanometer-scale periodic structures. HL is one of the interference lithography methods which have advantages for simple and fast generation of complex 2D and 3D ordered structures without defects. Compared with soft-interference lithography which needs elastomer phase masks, HL does not require any masks. In HL process, single laser beam split into multi-beams and merge together to generate multi-dimensional interference pattern. Interference of n-beams with different wave vectors enables to make intensity profiles of n-1 dimensions in space. Using photopolymerizable or photodegradable resins, resulting interference patterns can be materialized. Very short exposure time of few milliseconds is enough to achieve HL. I showed additional photolithography process for the hierarchical patterning of HL structures in the micrometer scale. I also invented a new strategy on holographically featured periodic nanostructures using hierarchical interference patterns of microprism arrays (MPAs) instead of single bulk prism. MPAs made of silicone elastomer were molded from anisotropically etched silicon master. By the laser exposure through the MPAs, it is possible to create 2D and 3D hierarchical patterns of periodic structures in single step. Using those multi-scale nanostructures as a mask, array of gold nanostructures could be generated.
Novel microfluidic devices were proposed to integrate nanoscale periodic structures inside microfluidic chip. Fusion of fluidic device and nanophotonic structures can lead to integrated optofluidic systems. The terminology “optofluidics” means the combination of photonics with microfluidic. From the optofluidic point of view, introduction of fluids can grant a tunability and addressability to the photonic structures incorporated with microfluidic chips. Because the photonic properties of periodic nanostructures such as PBG, LSPR and SERS can be sensitively changed by the surrounding media, microfluidic operation is powerful way for the fine control of optofluidic devices. This property is not only useful for the photonics applications but also for the μ-TAS application. On chip observation of the reflectance or transmittance spectra enables to characterize the modulation of PBG and SPR properties caused by surrounding fluids in real time. SERS signals were more complex and sensitive because they have peculiar correlation with the molecular structures of chemicals. To give chemical- and bio-functions to the nanophotonic structures, the surfaces of colloidal building blocks successfully modified in chapter 5.
Finally, I demonstrated proto type optofluidic chips by the combination of colloidal self-assembly and HL with PDMS microfluidic chips. PBG was sensitively tuned by the refractive index modulation of surrounding fluids flowing through the periodic nanostructures.
