The purpose of this study is to evaluate two kind of posture in going down stairs (one with going down straight with normal stair walking and another with going down stairs at an angle.) and examine physical influences the two give on lower extremity.
At this study, there are 5 mail and 5 female subjects participating. Walking motions have been recorded and muscle activities have been measured by using surface EMG. Questionnaires about muscle pain were written before and after the experimentation.
4 measures have been used for this measurement: Center of Mass - Center of Pressure rear inclination (CoM-CoP inclination) for stability, Torque at the last part of stance period for load on joints, %MVC for load on muscles, Symptom Scores for recognized pain
These measures showed more improvement in walking down stairs with an angle than normal way. While going down stairs with an angle, CoM-CoP inclination was smaller (p<0.05), %MVC in most of the muscles also decreased and torque either (p<0.05). Subjects felt less pain on lower extremity, especially at ankle and knee in target position.
This study provides evidence of balance taking and lower burden on lower extremity and moreover, reduced fall risk of passenger in walking down stairs with an angle.
