Cracks in concrete generally interconnect flow paths and increase concrete permeability. The increase in concrete permeability causes many problems in durability and serviceability.
The goal of this research is to suggest how to determine the allowable crack width for leakage control. Tests have been carried out as a function of hydraulic pressure(0.1 ~ 1 bar) and to find out allowable crack width for various hydraulic pressure more precisely, additional experiments were conducted for concrete specimens width crack width of 50 ∼ 100 ㎛.
The results showed that the rate of water flow was rapidly reduced after 2 ∼ 3 days because of the self healing. The main reason of self healing, the formation of $CaCO_3$ on the crack surface, was experimentally verified. It was found that allowable crack width decreased with the increase of hydraulic pressure. In this research is suggested a method how to determine the allowable crack width for leakage control. According to the results, the allowable crack width should be different according to the hydraulic pressure level and crack width.
