Peptides and proteins self-organize to form various nanostuctures including nanotubes, nanospheres and nanowires via their molecular recognizability. Recently, aromatic dipeptide molecules have attracted numerous attentions because of the high thermal and mechanical properties of their assembled morphologies.
In this thesis, I report the synthesis and liquid crystalline behavior of peptide nanowires. The liquid crystalline peptide nanowires were simply assembled from an aromatic dipeptide consisting of two successively connected phenylalanine units, which is well known as a structural motif for Alzheimer plaques. In an organic solvent, peptide nanowires were individually dispersed and showed colloidal nematic liquid crystalline behavior for a broad range of concentrations. Owing to the liquid crystallinity, the peptide nanowires readily formed well-aligned morphologies by applying external shear fields. The peptide nanowires also had a high resistivity to reactive ion etching process such that they are potentially useful nanoscale building blocks for bionanofabrication process.
