As environmental pollution brings serious problems in global, designers began to consider eco-production. However, with regard to the products which consume energy and other resources, it becomes more important to think over the amount of resources used when users interact with the products. Because user behaviors are easily induced by design elements, there is a strong possibility to make users act in environmentally friendly way while using products. This research has an aim of deriving users to use products proenvironmentally in a natural and unconscious way. To touch this goal, a design guideline for designers was needed.
For defining problems, user's behavior patterns affecting to nature were classified into three cases; OX selection, multi option selection, and judging optimum amount. As solutions, eight design methods changing user behavior were extracted from the concept of 'affordance' and 'thoughless act'. With many existing design cases, the methods were found to be also adapted for proenvironmental use. 'Making information visible' is useful to act when users do not act because they do not know, and 'mapping' is to make them understand product easily to help not wasting resources unexpectedly. A method of 'Meaning offer' strongly motivates users to act, and 'physical possibility' and 'constraint' helpes users when they actually act.
After analyzing cases according to behavior patterns, it was found that each pattern can be solved with different methods. The guideline contains which design method will be able to use when a product have a problem of each pattern. It was evaluated to be useful by making three new cases from each behavior pattern, and by interviewing four experts.
The guideline have potential to be a manual of real designing process when integrated into existing ecodesign strategies which considers other phases of product life cycles. It is expected more effectively with technical supports, service changes and political regulations.
환경오염이 전세계적으로 심각한 문제로 대두되면서, 디자인 분야에서도 친환경적 생산에 주력하고 있다. 하지만 에너지와 자원을 소비하는 제품에 있어서는 사용자가 제품과 인터렉션하는 동안의 환경적 영향이 생산이나 폐기 단계에 비해 훨씬 심각한 실정이다. 사용자의 행동이 디자인으로써 쉽게 달라질 수 있음을 고려할 때, 제품을 사용하는 동안 사용자의 행동을 변화시켜 친환경적으로 행동하도록 할 가능성은 충분할 것으로 예상할 수 있다. 본 연구는 사용자가 제품을 굳이 의식하지 않고도 자연스럽게 친환경적으로 사용하도록 디자인하고자 하는 목적을 가지고 있으며, 이를 위해 디자이너를 위한 가이드라인을 제안하고자 하였다. 문제를 정의하기 위해 환경에 영향을 미치는 사용자의 행동을 세가지로 분류하였는데, 이는 OX 선택, 객관식 선택, 그리고 적정량 판단이다. 이러한 문제에 대한 해결책으로는 `어포던스`와 `무의식적 행동`에 관한 연구로부터 여덟 가지의 사용자의 행동을 변화시키는 디자인 방법을 도출하였으며, 현존하는 사례들을 통해 이 방법이 친환경적인 사용에도 적용됨을 알 수 있었다. 정보를 가시화하는 방법은 사용자가 잘 몰라서 친환경적인 행동을 하지 못할 때 매우 유용하며, 매핑의 방법은 제품을 쉽게 이해하고 올바르게 사용하게 하여 의도치 않게 낭비될 수 있는 자원의 양을 줄여준다. 의미를 부여하는 방법은 사용자가 환경친화적인 행동을 실행하기 위한 강한 동기를 부여하며, 물리적인 사용 가능성과 제약은 사용자가 실제로 행동하는 동안 물리적으로 도와 사용 효율을 높여 환경에의 영향을 줄일 수 있는 방법이다. 행동 패턴에 따라 사례를 분석하여, 각 패턴 별로 서로 다른 디자인 방법들이 친환경적 사용에 유용함을 알아내었으며, 이 내용을 구체적인 디자인 가이드라인으로 제안하였다. 가이드라인을 사용하여 각 행동 패턴 별로 사례를 개발한 후, 전문가 인터뷰를 통해 가이드라인을 평가하였다. 제안한 디자인 가이드라인은, 제품의 전과정을 고려한 현존하는 에코디자인 전략에 통합되어 실제 디자인 프로세스에서 사용이 가능하며, 기술적인 지원, 서비스의 변화, 법적인 규제 등과 함께 고려될 때에 매우 효과적일 것으로 평가되었다.
