Two separate network systems of complex geometry, in which each system is maintained at a constant pressure, are connected through a leakage pipe. When the blocked leakage pipe is opened suddenly, the different pressure level creates flow from one system to the other until the equilibrium pressure is reached. Difficulties associated with the problem are geometric complexity, unsteadiness, and compressibility of the flow. Each system is made of corrugated membrane. Due to the fact that the ratio of the stream-wise length to the characteristic length of the cross-section is so large, the flow can be approximated to be one dimensional.
To simulate the two standard test procedures used in the industry, two cases are considered: a low pressure difference case with the pressure varying at both ends and a high pressure difference case with a fixed atmospheric pressure at one end.
In the low pressure difference case, since the pressure difference between two systems is very small compared to the equilibrium pressure, the flow may be assumed to be laminar and the governing equations reduce to a simple equation of heat-conduction type. The decay rate of the flow is then solved either directly by using the Laplace transform or the normal mode analysis. Two types of solutions for the decay rate are obtained and compared with each other.
Mass conservation at each node point gives a system of homogeneous linear equations for the decay rate. The decay rate is then estimated by enforcing that the determinant be zero for this system to have a non-trivial solution. The IMSL subroutine is used to evaluate the determinant. The decay rate may also be obtained analytically using the perturbation expansion. When a perturbation is made to above homogeneous system, the leading order terms give the equations for the analytic solution. It turns out that the solution of the leading-order term gives a sufficiently accurate decay rate.
The analytical solution of network flow enables us to easily estimate the decay rate. The analytic and the numerical solutions are in good agreement, and the analytic decay time compares favorably with the available measured data.
In the high pressure difference case, the pressure difference between the two systems is much higher than the low pressure difference case. Since one network system is maintained at a constant atmospheric pressure while the other is at a much lower pressure at the outset, the pressure drop occurs mainly in the defect area. The flow is assumed to be turbulent there. Choking does not seem to occur anywhere in the defect area, because the back pressure of the network system is always higher than the pressure at the end of defect point. The governing equation for this case is obtained from the mass conservation. The mass flow rate is determined iteratively to satisfy the governing equation and the associated boundary conditions using an algorithm based on the correlation of the pressure change with the friction in defect and Darcy`s law for porous medium in a configuration feature. The decay rate for a given mass-flow rate compares favorably with the available experimental data.
이 알고리즘의 과정은 pressure change with the friction in defect와 형상이 가지는 porous media의 Darcy`s law를 이용하여 구할 수 있다.mass flow rate를 위한 알고리즘은 쉽게 decay rate를 예측할 수 있게 한다.
