In this dissertation, to develop ECC produce with granulated blast furnace slag (Slag-ECC hereafter) so as to achieve moderately high strength while maintaining high ductility, to predict the tensile stress-strain relation for composites exhibiting variability in the intensity of multiple cracking, as characterized by the tensile behavior of the Slag-ECC and to develop and apply two types of prepackaged ECC that exhibit fluid properties suitable for self-consolidating and shotcreting processes, respectively, a series of experiments and numerical analysis were performed.
Relating to development of Slag-ECC, ground granulated blast furnace slag particles were employed which exhibits moderately high composite strength while maintaining high ductility. In the material development, single fiber pullout tests and matrix fracture tests are performed, followed by micromechanical analyses to properly select the range of mixture proportion. Subsequent direct tensile tests are employed to assess the strain-hardening behavior of the composite, which exhibited high ductility and strength with the addition of slag. High ductility is most likely due to enhanced workability and fiber dispersion performance which is attributed to the oxidized grain surface of slag, as verified by fiber dispersion tests.
In relation to predicting the tensile stress-strain relation of Slag-ECC, material variations including inclined angle of fiber and distance between fibers, are considered in determining the bridging curve. Furthermore, the design criteria for achieving PSH (Pseudo Strain-Hardening) composites, is proposed, which should be practical and comprehensive. The process of designing these composites is facilitated by the practical design criteria using micromechanics, which are based on two performance indices: stress performance index $\sigma_{peak}$/$\sigma_{fc}$ and energy performance index $\acute{J}_b/J_{tip}$.
Relating to development and application of prepackaged ECCs to self-consolidating and shotcreting processes, rheology is controlled such that it can be directly applicable to construction in the field, using prepackaged products with all powdered ingredients. To control the rheological properties of the composites, which have different fluid properties that facilitate two types of processing, the viscosity change of the cement paste suspensions over time is initially investigated. The proper dosage of the admixtures in the cement paste is then selected. The two mixture proportions are then optimized by self-consolidating and shotcreting tests. The applicability of self-consolidating and shotcreting prepackaged ECCs is verified in the field with the optimal mixtures.
