Although designers have tried in diverse ways to create new products that satisfy ′the real needs of human being′, unexpected problems may occur when a new artifact is made. Products designed for good intentions could hold many potential problems unless the potential influences of ′existing things′ are fully predicted.
The objective of This thesis is to develop the theory of ethics in design and develop tools for preventing ethical problems. Relevant cases were analyzed and structures of perception underneath each case were reviewed to understand theories of design ethics. And also, through the interview with designers, it was found that practical tools in the eye-level of designers were in need.
Major findings are as follows: First, most cases could be divided into two categories, i. e. negative and positive obligation. If the design acts as the core problem, it is negative obligation. And if it acts as the key for problem solving, it is positive obligation; Second, although ethical responsibilities to a certain design used to be fully obligated towards designers only, ethical problems could occur in places out-of-reach from the designer. This is why each case could also be categorized by the subject who conducted the immoral act; Third, it was found that specialized tools in the eye-level of designers were in desperate need. This study also found that designers especially need to improve in sharing their experiences regarding ethical issues in design.
Based on the above findings, two tools were developed. 'Design ethics manual based on the PLC(Product Life Cycle)' and ′Design Ethics DB′ which can be used to understand the potential problems the design may hold in advance.
디자이너들은 \\`인간의 진정한 필요\\`를 채우기 위해 다양한 방법으로 새로운 제품들을 시도해왔다. 그러나 새로운 인공물은 언제나 예상치 못한 문제들은 드러내곤 했다. 심지어 좋은 의도로 만들어진 제품조차도 때로는 윤리적 문제를 내포할 수 있다. 이 논문은 산업디자인에 있어서 윤리적 이론을 확립하고 윤리적 문제를 최소화할 도구를 만드는 것을 목표로 한다.
본 연구에서는 문헌조사를 통해 기존의 디자인 윤리의 담론을 살펴보고, 이와 연결된 각종 사례들을 분석하여 그 저변에 흐르는 인식 구조를 발견하였다. 또한 인터뷰를 통해 디자인 윤리가 실무에서 어떻게 다루어지고 있는지를 파악하였으며, 디자이너 수준의 실질적 도구가 필요함을 알았다.
주요 발견점으로는 첫째, 디자인 윤리는 소극적 의무, 적극적 의무로 나누어볼 수 있다. 디자인이 문제의 중심이 되어 이를 해결하는 것은 소극적 의무에 해당하고, 디자인이 윤리적 문제의 해결책으로 등장하는 것은 적극적 의무에 해당한다.
둘째, PLC전반에 걸쳐 윤리적 문제를 일으키는 행위자가 누구인가로 분류할 수 있다. 디자인 윤리는 모두 디자이너에게 책임이 있다는 시각에서 탈피하여, 전 과정에서 디자인과 연관되어 문제를 일으키는 각종 stakeholder 로 사례를 분류하는 것이다.
셋째, 기업환경에서는 윤리적 디자인을 이루기 위한 디자이너 레벨의 도구가 없으며 이에 대한 보완이 필요하다. 또한, 디자인과 관련된 윤리문제의 경험을 공유할 적절한 방법도 필요하다.
마지막으로, 이러한 필요를 바탕으로 디자인 윤리 문제를 최소화하는 \\`디자인 윤리 매뉴얼\\`과 \\`디자인 윤리 DB\\`를 제안하였다.
