The image retention, continued presence of a weak image after iterant strong discharge, has frequently become an issue of the image defects in an AC PDP. Although there have been efforts to reduce it, we still don’t know why it happens in an AC PDP. Even there is no technical method to measure the phenomenon. Since dark image retention occurred during the reset period, observation of the characteristics of the reset discharge is important to understand image retention. In this work, temporal characteristics of IR emission of reset discharge were observed to understand the relationship between dark image retention and the reset discharge. In addition, the temporal behaviors of luminance and CIEXYZ tristimulus values are also confirmed, and they are compared to IR emission.
In case of measuring the black luminance, as the slope of ramp pulse got steeper and the initial value was increased, the quantity of temporal image sticking was increased and it took more time to be recovered to the initial state. The CIE color space factors showed similar tendency. And the IR peak time also showed the same recovery tendency, but the temporal sticking was different since sharper slope of the ramp pulse arrived at the firing voltage earlier. So it is hard to discuss temporal image sticking only with the time change. On the other hand, the IR integrated value escape the tendency at the steeper slope. It can be said that observing luminance and CIE color space factors are suitable measurement for investigating image retention in AC PDP.
Furthermore, it is found that the image retention and address discharge time lag are in trade-off. It is hard to improving both image retention and time lag by only changing the waveforms.
AC PDP의 화질을 저해하는 요소 중 하나로 Image Retention 현상을 들 수 있다. 강한 방전이 연속적으로 일어난 뒤에, 강한 방전의 잔상 이미지가 다음 영상에 영향을 끼치는 현상을 말한다. 이를 줄이기 위해 많은 연구원들의 노력이 꾸준히 이어져오고 있지만, 현재까지 AC PDP에서의 image retention 현상에 대한 메커니즘은 규명되지 않고 있으며, 그 측정 방법 또한 정립이 되지 않은 실정이다.
이러한image retention을 연구하기 위해서는 방전 후 이전의 이미지가 사라지거나 회복하는 시간과 검은 계조에서 발생하는 image retention 현상이 구동방식의 reset 구간에서 일어나기 때문에 reset 방전을 일시적인 변화를 관찰하는 것이 중요하다고 판단된다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 reset 구간에서의 IR emission과 luminance를 관측함으로써 image retention을 정량적으로 측정할 수 있는 방법을 제시하고, reset 방전과 image retention과의 관계를 이해하고자 하는 노력이 이루어졌다.
강한 방전 전후의 black luminance와 CIE 색도계를 관측함으로써 Dark image retention을 정량적으로 측정 가능 하였고, IR emission 은 부적합한 것으로 판단된다. 또한 제시 된 방법적 기준을 통해 측정된 image retention은 address discharge time lag와 상반 관계에 있는 것을 확인하였다.
