Under the rapid development of technology and material richness, users' life styles and needs have been diversified. Therefore, it is getting important to develop originative products which enhance emotional communication to fulfill their diverse needs. In addition, as the product attributes become more intellectual and interactive, dynamic attribute implying time attribute is considered important to enhance emotional value of a product. Especially, among dynamic attributes, physical movement is a critical factor. However, it has limitations in scale and shape and also difficulties of embodiment because of three-dimensional modeling and material. Under the circumstance like this, it is lack of research related to specific design support or methodologies to apply physical movement in design field at the moment.
This research investigated how to build a design language for physical movement as the solution to enhance the emotional value of a product. In order to explore this problem a framework of the relationship between emotional expression and physical movement was developed. Based on the review of previous researches and the field study, three qualities of movement were identified to express emotions: speed, openness and smoothness. In order to explore how this framework can be used in designing a new interactive product or in improving existing products by adding physical movement features, a new interactive device called ‘Emotion Palpus’was developed. It is a physical device that can generate physical movement to express various emotions. It can be attached to existing products, such as PC monitors, telephones, and audio devices. The movement represents implicit indication of functional and emotional states of the products. Also, it can be used as a prototyping and test platform. This research used ‘Emotion Palpus’ to create movement stimuli for the experiment to verify the proposed framework. The 'Emotion Palpus' shows the possibility of application of physical movement as a new medium to express emotions. If the proposed framework and ‘Emotion Palpus’ are applied to various products, it is expected to enhance user's emotional experiences.
급변하는 기술과 물질적 풍요는 소비자의 라이프 스타일과 요구의 다변화를 가져왔다. 이에 따라 소비자의 다양한 기호에 맞는 독창적이고 감성적 커뮤니케이션이 가능한 제품의 개발이 더욱 중요해 지고 있다. 또한, 제품의 속성이 점점 지능적이고 상호작용성을 가진 제품으로 변화함에 따라 시간 속성을 내포하는 동적인 디자인 요소가 감성적 가치를 높이는데 중요한 요소로 고려되고 있다. 그 중 물리적 움직임은 제품의 감성적 기능적 가치를 증진시키기에 주목할 만한 요소이다. 그러나 3차원적인 조형 및 재질 등으로 인해 크기와 형태의 제약이나 구조, 기술적 구현의 어려움과 같은 한계가 존재한다. 이런 상황 하에 현재까지 디자인 및 관련 분야에서 물리적인 움직임을 활용하기 위한 보다 구체적인 디자인 지원 및 방법에 대한 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 물리적 움직임을 통해 제품의 감성적 가치를 증진시키기 위한 방안으로 우선 감정과 움직임 사이의 관계에 대한 프레임워크를 구축하였고, 이를 활용하기 위한 사례로 새로운 인터랙티브 기기인 감성촉수를 개발하였다. 이는 감정을 표현하는 새로운 매체로써 물리적 움직임의 활용에 대한 가능성을 보여준다. 제안된 프레임워크와 인터랙티브 기기는 다양한 제품과 연계 되어 사용자의 감성적 경험을 더욱 증진 시킬 수 있을 것이다.
