As business competition has expanded beyond domestic scale toward an international spectrum, understanding users' cultural contexts plays an important role in design process. Ranging from statistical data research, usability testing, and observational research to user participatory design, current practices of user research methodologies vary in their objectives and information gathering techniques. However, most of these methodologies were developed in North America and Europe, so one may question if these methods would work as well with people from other cultures.
The paper explores the cultural effects on the feedback collected in and the process of user research and the need for adapting them to different cultural contexts. Literature research and previous empirical findings indicated the existence of dissimilarity between individualistic-low context culture and collectivistic-high context culture during the interaction process of user research. We presumed four factors which influence user research methodologies: spontaneity of participation, uncertainty avoidance, criticizing style and attitude in group.
Three user research methods, a probe technique, a usability test and a focus group interview, were selected for the experiment to observe influences of four factors. In a probe technique which heavily relies on uncertainty, Korean participants' low spontaneity influences sufficiency of results, and they did not really work with the ambiguous format of workbook well. In a usability test, Korean participants revealed fewer problems than Dutch participants. While Dutch participants tend to play around with products, Korean participants felt uncomfortable with ‘observed' and ‘tested' situation. Finally, in a focus group interview, Korean participants' activeness for discussion was lower and they needed more time to feel comfortable to express opinions. They got more active, especially, after the intermission. These differentiations revealed in three methods emphasize on the need to consider users' cultural contexts when planning and conducting user research.
시장이 세계화되면서, 디자인 과정에서 '사용자'의 다양한 문화적 배경에 대한 이해가 더욱 중요해지고 있다. 그런데, 현재 디자인 분야에서 활용하고 있는 대부분의 사용자 연구 방법들이 북미나 유럽 지역에서 개발된 것이기에, 이 방법들을 다른 문화권에 적용하였을 때에도 과연 기대한 결과를 얻을 수 있는가에 대해서는 의문을 가질 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 문화적 차이가 사용자 연구의 과정 및 결과에 미치는 영향과, 이러한 문화적 영향의 고려 방안에 대해 다루고 있다. 문화와 사용자 연구 방법에 대한 이론 고찰을 통해 사용자 연구에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 네 가지 영향 요소인 참여의 자발성, 불확실 회피 성향, 문제 비판 성향, 그리고 집단 내 태도를 추출하고 한국과 네덜란드에서의 비교 실험을 통해 이를 규명하였다. 그 결과, 한국에서는 문제점 발견 중심의 평가 기법과 자가 관찰 기법의 생산성이 네덜란드에 비해 떨어짐을 알 수 있었고 포커스 그룹 인터뷰에서도 네덜란드 참여자에 비해 의견 도출 및 구성원간 인터랙션의 활발성이 적게 관찰되었다. 따라서 한국에서 사용자 연구를 할 때에는 사용자의 참여 동기를 높이기 위한 요소나 연구자와의 지속적인 커뮤니케이션, 그리고 센시타이징(Sensitizing)의 역할이 중요함을 알 수 있었다.
