Interest in the influence of culture on user interface design has been growing as the world market is globalized. However, products and services have been localized at the superficial level through checking text, number, date/time format, images, symbol and functionalities without reflecting any unconscious cultural effects. Interface studies with cognitive and implicit viewpoints are rare, if any, and mostly on interaction in the desktop environment. These studies are providing theoretical knowledge, but it is still difficult to apply it directly to small-sized mobile devices. This is because the mobile interface has a much more limited information structure and sequence, compared with a desktop interface which accommodates more.
It is, therefore, essential that we understand the cultural impact on the mobile interface independently, considering the characteristics of mobile environment and examine how the mobile interface can be culturally adapted. This study aims to illustrate how culturally different cognitive styles influence information structure and sequence in the mobile phone interface by examining users' performance and attitude toward the interface. On the basis of examining cultural cognitive styles applicable to interfaces, hypothesis on the relation between cognitive styles and structure/flow in mobile phone interface were established.
30 Korean participants and 30 Dutch participants participated in on-screen prototype test and cognitive style test. In Experiment 1, each cultural group showed a different preference on the function/theme-related menus and individuals categorization styles had correlation with their preferences. This indicates that the cultural differences in preference come from differences in cultural cognitive styles. In Experiment 2, both participants showed more favorable attitudes toward Parallel approach and no significant differences in performance and preference were found. It was considered that the tasks were rather too easy to find differences in performance and the methodological limitation in evaluating cognitive styles drew wrong cognitive data. Correlation between pre-experience and preference was not found to be significant in any tests. Other significant findings were revealed.
