Studies on the evaporation phenomena of binary component single droplet which contains dissolved non-volatile solid were presented. Droplet suspended at the end of the pin, then exposed in the flow field where the velocity and temperature are constant during evaporation process.
To find the effect of suspending pin on the evaporation of single droplet, semi-analytical relations were set up. The numerical calculations were carried with fixed boundary conditions, which means the droplet is fixed in the flow field of surrounding gas with no suspending pin. These results were compared with the experimental results. From the results of single distilled water droplet evaporation, the calculated values consist with the experimental values very well (96.5 percent accuracy) in the early stage of evaporation. This means the heating effect caused by heat transfer from suspending pin can be neglected in the early time period of evaporation process. In the last stage of evaporation, the volume of the droplet was decreased by evaporation and the difference of the droplet lifetime increased up to 12.2-18.6 percent between calculated and experimental results. The difference is caused by increased relative heat transfer rate from pin to droplet.
As non-volatile component of droplet, sodium chloride (NaCl) was used in this study. The difference between calculated and experimental values increased to 16.2 -34.7 percent. To consist with the calculation result to the experimental result, we modified the non-dimensional variable, which is liquid-phase Sherwood number $(Sh_L)$ expresses the ratio of mass transfer coefficient at the surface to the mass diffusion coefficient of inside the droplet. The modified liquid-phase Sherwood number $(Sh_L,MOD)$ is functions of velocity, surrounding gas temperature, and mass fraction of sodium chloride (NaCl).
By modification of liquid-phase Sherwood number, it was possible to estimate evaporation characteristics of the nonvolatile component aqueous solution droplet with 97.5 percent accuracy at low surrounding temperature, velocity, and initial mass fraction of nonvolatile component.
Droplet surface concentration and mean liquid phase concentration of nonvolatile component were changed considerably by liquid-phase Sherwood number modification. The increased concentration at droplet surface, on the other hand, liquid phase mean concentration of nonvolatile component was decreased. This proves that the nonvolatile component in liquid phase roles as an obstruct factor in mass transfer of the volatile component to the droplet surface.
In spite of using modified liquid-phase Sherwood number $(Sh_L,MOD)$, in the conditions of increased surrounding gas temperature, velocity, and initial mass fraction of nonvolatile component, error was increased (6.0 percent or more). Estimated crystallization time consists well with experimental results in the low surrounding gas temperature and velocity condition. In region of high surrounding gas temperature and velocity, the error was gradually increased.
The structure of formed particle is solid when droplet evaporates in room temperature condition. In experiment, more porous structure crystal was appeared as surrounding gas temperature increases and crystallization process completed more earlier than estimated by calculation.
In this study only sodium chloride aqueous solution was used, the investigation method suggested in this study can be use to estimate the drying characteristic to other dissolved non-volatile binary components droplet and spray drying manufacturing with qualitatively in practice.
