This thesis focuses on the effects of the network structure on inter-firm knowledge sharing. Knowledge sharing among firms takes place as a barter process where firms exchange different kinds of knowledge with other firms. Different from interpersonal or inter-unit knowledge transfer in a firm, firms can share their knowledge, especially tacit knowledge, with others when they are able to receive other new knowledge. A number of firms are located on a network and are coupled with a few other firms directly. Firms have repeated opportunities to exchange their knowledge with other directly linked firms and transfer knowledge if reciprocal benefits exist. From this assumption, we look into the relationship between inter-firm knowledge sharing and network structure.
As a network changes from a regular network, in which every agent is connected to k nearest agents, to a random network, in which every agent meets randomly selected agents, ‘small-world’ networks in the middle of regular and random networks have the highest knowledge level when knowledge sharing occurs by knowledge exchange. However, as the network structure shifts towards a random network, knowledge sharing speed is faster.
We assert that these results show inter-firm knowledge sharing is affected by the network structure of firms.
본 연구는 기업 간 지식공유에 있어서 네트워크 구조의 영향에 대해 살펴본다. 기업 간 지식의 공유는 내가 필요하지만 가지고 있지 않은 지식을 다른 기업으로부터 받고, 내가 가진 지식을 전달하는 형태의 교환방식에 의해 발생할 수 있다. 왜냐하면, 개인이나 조직 내 지식전달과는 다르게, 기업 간 지식공유는 매우 이기적인 목적에 의해 이루어 질 수 있기 때문이다. 기업은 다른 기업들과 네트워크 형태의 협력관계를 가지고 있다. 이를 일종의 네트워크로 파악하여, 네트워크로 연결되어 있는 다른 기업과 더이상 얻을 지식이 없을 때까지 지식교환 방식에 의해 지식을 공유하게 된다. 이와같은 가정을 바탕으로, 기업 간 지식공유와 네트워크 구조에 대한 관계를 알아본다. 기업 간 네트워크 구조를 매우 밀집된 형태의 regular network에서 매우 분산된 형태의 random network까지 변화시킬때, 중간 형태의 small-world network가 다른 네트워크 구조에서 보다 가장 높은 지식공유 수준을 나타난다. 그러나, 지식공유 속도에 있어서는 다른 네트워크 구조에 비해 random network구조에 가까워질 수록 빠르게 나타난다. 이러한 결과를 통해 기업 간 지식공유에 있어서 기업 간 네트워크 구조가 영향을 가진다는 사실을 알 수 있다.
