Since the first discovery of carbon nanotube in 1991, a window to new technological areas has been opened. One of the emerging applications of CNTs is the reinforcement of composite materials to overcome the performance limits of conventional materials. Recent developments in CNT/polymer composites have shown the potential for improving the strength of polymers, and this finding has encouraged researchers to use carbon nanotubes as reinforcement for metal and ceramic matrix. However, because of the difficulties in distributing CNTs homogeneously in metal matrix by means of traditional composite processes, it has been doubted whether CNTs can really reinforce metals. In this thesis, the novel fabrication process for carbon nanotube/metal (CNT/Metal) nanocomposites was developed and their mechanical properties were investigated.
The novel process consists of fabrication of CNT/Metal nanocomposite powders based on molecular level mixing process and their consolidation. The molecular level mixing process for fabricating CNT/Metal composite powders involves suspending CNTs in a solvent by surface functionalization, mixing metal ions with CNT suspension, and heterogeneous nucleation of metal nanoparticles on CNT/Metal ion mixtures. In this study, this process produces CNT/Cu composite powders whereby the CNTs are homogeneously implanted within Cu powders or Cu nanoparticles are threaded by CNTs names as pearl-necklace structure. The CNT/Cu nanocomposite with 10vol.% CNTs, consolidated by spark plasma sintering of CNT/Cu composite powders, shows to be 3 times higher strength and 2 times higher Young’s modulus than Cu matrix. This extra-ordinary strengthening effect of carbon nanotubes in metal is higher than that of any other reinforcement ever used for metal matrix composites. It must be noted that the strengthening by carbon nanotube is parallel to other strengthening mechanisms including precipitation strengthening, grain refinement strengthening and work hardening. Therefore, if the strength of Cu matrix becomes 1GPa with other strengthening mechanism such as nanostructuring of grain size, it is expected that the strength of CNT/Cu nanocomposite can be enhanced over 3GPa by strengthening of CNTs.
The strengthening mechanism of carbon nanotubes in a metal matrix composites could be explained by load transfer phenomenon which is clearly supported by the homogeneous dispersion of CNTs within a Cu matrix and strong interfacial bonding between CNT and Cu. In addition, it is confirmed the grain size refinement of metal matrix provides effective strengthening of Cu matrix nanocomposite. As a results of these, when addition of CNTs and metallurgical modification of matrix are combined, it is implicated that high-strength metal matrix nanocomposites could be fabricated by using molecular level mixing process. In fact, by addition of 7vol.% carbon nanotubes in nanocrystalline Co matrix, the yield strength increases up to 1500MPa, which is comparable to that of ceramic materials rather than metals. These results clearly prove that the applying nanotechnologies in metallic system by combination of nanocrystallization of metal matrix and addition of carbon nanotubes improve the mechanical performance of metal beyond the current limitation.
In this thesis, molecular level mixing process for CNT/Metal nanocomposite is proved to be an promising method to homogeneously distribute CNTs in a metal matrices. By using this novel process, it was shown carbon nanotubes have the most effective strengthening efficiency among all reinforcement materials: 8 times higher than that of SiC particle and 3 times higher than that of SiC whisker. It was suggested the load transfer from metal matrix to CNTs is main strengthening orgin of CNT/Metal nanocomposites. This thesis suggests the load transfer phenomenon in CNT/Cu nanocomposites is clearly guaranteed by the strong bonding between CNT and Cu caused by remnant oxygen near CNTs. In addition, it is confirmed that grain size refinement of metal matrix is also effective method to improve strength of CNT/Metal nanocomposites.
