Velocity distribution functions of metastable argon ions ($3d'^4F_{7/2}$) have been measured to obtain metastable ion density and temperature by a diode laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique in magnetized inductively coupled plasma as a function of pressure, rf power, and magnetic field strength. We have constructed simple global models for the metastable ion density and temperature. The metastable ion density fits well with the calculated density from the rate equation. From the calculation, the minimum metastable ion density should be approximately $10^{7}cm^{-3}$ to obtain a LIF signal in our experimental scheme. In helium mixing and bias experiments, we suggest that the spatial potential can be the dominant ion heating source. In our global model, the total spatial potential energy contributes about 0.001∼0.01% and 1∼10% to ion and neutral temperatures respectively to obtain about 0.1eV ion temperature. The measured ion temperature agrees with the calculation.
