After the IMF financial crisis of the late 1990's, the need for the study on corporate turnaround and its process has been raised due to many insolvent enterprises. Prior studies on the corporate turnaround are mostly based on organization deterioration, situational circumstances, turnaround strategy, and processes. In the studies based on process of corporate turnaround, there is one opinion that company must cut the cost and assets in the beginning. Another opinion is that there is no need to cut the cost and asset, but the company can earn more income by only changing the strategy, while the third opinion is that the two strategies mentioned above has to be processed simultaneously or repetitively.
In order for the corporate to turnaround, the strategy must be designed and set under the excellent leadership. Under the proper strategy, the corporate will go through operational and strategic changes effect the organizational structure. Prior theories have not dealt with the leadership and organizational structure in the corporate turnaround.
The study and case analysis has been conducted about the process of successful corporate turnaround. With the prior theories about process of corporate turnaround, a company's leadership, strategy, and organizational structure was analyzed.
From the studies and analysis, 3 findings have been derived.
1. In the process of corporate turnaround, a strong leadership from the CEO(Chief Executive Officer) is needed. With strong leadership, the CEO has to show clear vision that the corporate will successfully be turned around.
2. In the process of corporate turnaround, the corporate must define the primary resources and may sell assets or divisions to bring in the cash to secure them. Also, environment and culture have to be set to support the participants of the corporate to become more efficient and systematic. If needed, strategic alliance can be formed to strengthen the corporate's core competence and financial status.
3. In the process of corporate turnaround, the organizational structure may be reorganized due to the strategy. For the organization to be efficient, the hierarchy of the organization may become horizontal or simple format from vertical format.
A successful corporate company was thoroughly studied for leadership, strategy, and organizational structure. This study showed some insights about these three areas and dealt with leadership and organizational structure which was not covered thoroughly in the prior studies.
However, since this study is based on a specific corporate, a lack of objectivity of the study does exist. Therefore in the future, more studies about successful corporate turnaround in different industries are needed. Also, studies based on samples to verify the hypothesis are needed in order to find universal thesis which can be applied to all companies.
90년대말의 외환위기 사태 이후 국내 부실기업들이 급격히 늘어난 상황에서 회생전략 및 그에 대한 과정과 관련해서 연구의 필요성에 의하여 이번 연구가 실시되었다. 기존의 회생전략에 대한 내용연구 분야에서는 조직의 쇠퇴, 처해있던 상황, 회생전략, 그리고 회생과정 등에 대한 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 회생전략의 과정연구 분야에서는 비용, 자산을 반드시 먼저 축소해야 한다는 주장과, 상황에 따라서는 그러한 단계 없이도 전략적인 변화를 통한 매출의 증대만으로 충분하다는 주장, 그리고 이러한 두가지 변화가 동시에 또는 반복적으로 이루어진다는 주장 등이 있다.
기업이 회생하기 위해서는 우수한 리더십을 전제로 전략이 세워지게 되고, 이를 바탕으로 전략적인 변화와 운영적인 변화가 일어나는 회생과정 속에서 조직구조는 많은 변화를 겪게 된다. 기존의 이론에서는 회생과정에서의 리더십과 조직구조에 대한 변화에 대해서는 충분히 다루어지지 않고 있었다. 이를 배경으로 기업이 회생하는 과정에 대한 이론적 고찰과 사례 분석을 실시하였다. 회생전략의 과정이론을 고찰하여 이를 바탕으로 회생기업에 있어서 리더십의 중요성, 전략 및 조직구조 변화에 대해서 분석을 하였다.
본 연구는 한 기업의 사례를 리더십, 전략, 조직구조 세 가지 측면을 봄으로써 다양한 통찰력을 제시하였다는 점과 기존의 회생전략 연구에서 미흡했던 리더십과 조직구조 변화에 대한 통찰력을 제공하였다는 점에서 학문적 의의가 있다.
그러나 본 연구는 한 기업을 대상으로 한 연구이기에 연구의 객관성이 부족하다. 앞으로 다른 산업의 회생기업에 대한 사례 연구와 다수의 표본을 바탕으로 한 가설 검증 형태의 연구가 이루어져 일반적으로 적용될 수 있는 일반이론을 도출하기 위한 연구도 진행될 필요가 있다.
