This research focuses on an analysis of whether the credit spread contains the information about future business cycle in Korea and the United States bond markets, respectively.
First, the research introduces and develops a hypothesis explaining whether the credit spread between 3-year Korean government bond and 3-year Korean corporate bond could be related to future real economy activity in Korea bond markets. When the business condition is normal, a signal property is very weak, because there is no information about business cycle of the credit spread.
In the next step, this paper focuses on whether the credit spread between 10 year Treasury bond and the credit rating Baa corporate bond in the United States bond markets has information about real economy activity. As a result, if this credit spread is analyzed when decomposed to two spreads, there exists information about business cycle and it can act as a signal.
The reason why the credit spreads have different meaning in the bond markets in Korea and the United States could be drawn from maturity of the capital markets. If the credit spread has information about future business cycle, it can be used more valuable. Therefore, if Korea bond market matures, We expect that the credit spread can contain many useful information as in the United States bond market.
