A main goal of this thesis is to design an EMG pattern classifier which is robust to muscular fatigue effects. Muscular fatigue is occurred by sustained muscle contraction. When a user operates a system by his/her EMG, he/she have to sustain contraction state for controlling the system. A novel fatigue compensation method is proposed to improve pattern classification rates.
Overall procedure of proposed system is based on general pattern classification algorithm. We defined six basic motions considering user's reaction and operating directions of applications to extract user's intention effectively. We also determined proper channel locations according to pre-defined basic motions. EMGs in signal space are mapped to feature space with a lower dimension. Time-domain features are extracted through simple calculation. They are applied to inputs of pattern classifier. Fuzzy min-max neural network (FMMNN) is adopted as a pattern classifier. FMMNN utilizes hyperbox fuzzy sets as pattern classes. Class boundaries are generated by a union of hyperboxes. A hyperbox is completely defined by its min point and max point, and a membership function is defined with respect to these hyper min-max points.
In experiments, we measured feature variations by sustained muscle contractions. We can observe that trends of feature variation are consistent. Therefore, variation amount of features for each class can be found with a sustained time of muscle contraction through `start-time detection' procedure. Fatigue compensation method is to move hyperboxes of FMMNN based on the variation of features. Proposed fatigue compensation method is successfully applied to a continuous motion classification.
A contribution of this thesis is about `on-line learning' property of FMMNN. Even though there is on-line learning property in conventional FMMNN, it just adds current information without losing previous information. On-line learning of proposed algorithm is an adaptation for current information as losing old information. It is significant that proposed algorithm reflects a human-friendly aspect.
