New component of carbon nanotube (CNT) paste is explored with an attempt to develop a carbon nanotube field emitter backlight unit (CNT-FE BLU) fabricated by screen printing method. The field emission property of CNT-FE BLU fabricated by screen printing method is greatly influenced by CNT paste and the condition of printed CNT film. Therefore it is necessary to control the composition and component of CNT paste in order to enhance the field emission property of CNT-FE BLU. CNT paste is composed of CNT powder, binder materials, frit glass, and additives. In this dissertation, the roles of each paste component were evaluated by variation of field emission properties, and new components of organic binder and inorganic additives were suggested. The CNT-FE BLU panels of 3.5 inch and 10 inch were fabricated using the developed CNT paste and also the degradation property of CNT tips was evaluated using various analyses.
To reduce residual of organic binder materials on the surface of CNT, P(MMA-co-BMA) random copolymer was developed as a new binder material. The weight of the residual after burning process at 350℃was measured by TGA. The percentage of residual was 0.015 % of initial weight which was only quarter of that of commercial binder material. The measured field emission property demonstrated that the developed P(MMA-co-BMA) was effective to reduce the residual on the surface of CNT, which is critically important for improving the field emission property of CNT-FE BLU fabricated by screen printing method.
To enhance the field emission property of CNT-FE BLU, the new inorganic additives was suggested to be included in the CNT paste as a filler material. Using the electron emission from dielectric materials, the field emission property of CNT field emitter fabricated by screen printing method was greatly enhanced. The used dielectric materials, $BaTiO_3$ and $(Ba,Sr)TiO_3$, have pyroelectric property so that the pyroelectric electron emission was measured at the temperature variation of about 250℃for 30 min. From these results, the dielectric materials which have the pyroelectron emission were suggested to be effective inorganic additive materials.
The effect of degassed elements from the phosphor layer on a carbon nanotube cathode was investigated. During the operation of field emission backlight units, it was found that zinc and sulfur were degassed from the phosphor anode. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that sp² bonding in the hexagonal carbon network changed to zinc-assisted sp³-like bonding, modified by the adsorption of the zinc atom. The change of the CNT structure to a non-hexagonal carbon network suggests that the electron emission from the degraded CNT tips decreases due to the higher work function of sp³-like bonding, compared to that of sp² bonding.
1) organic binder
2) Inorganic binder (frit glass, inorganic powder)
3) Field emission enhanced by dielectric materials
(2) Degradation of CNT FE-BLU panel by phosphor layer
